The Watch
Here we have a 2022 Baltic MR01 Silver Micro-Rotor taking its inspiration from the Calatrava style watches of the past such as the Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 96 released in 1932, this watch is part of their second batch run and is therefore unnumbered. The 36mm brushed stainless steel case gently curves over your wrist, and elegant sweeping lugs with a lug-to-lug length of 43.5mm and a case thickness of 9.9mm ensure a comfortable fit on your wrist. A polished and brushed stepped smooth bezel holds a high domed Hesalite crystal, and the silver dial has a grainy texture with an outer minute track precisely painted. Applied Breguet style indexes that shimmer in the light as you rotate your wrist marking the hours, between the 7 and 8, we have a sub-second dial with Guilloche detailing. Elegant leaf hands complete this sophisticated vintage-inspired dial. On the reverse, a screwed-down exhibition case back is secured with 6 screws and inside an automatic Hangzhou CAL. 5000A, 30 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. Hangzhou is a direct competitor to SEAGULL whose movement can be found in the Baltic BI-Compax chronographs. The micro-rotor sits inside the movement making it much thinner, decorated with circular Côtes de Genève, perlage just under the rotor, and blue-coloured screws, this attractive watch is appealing on both sides. Baltic's attention to detail is inspiring. The watch comes fitted on a 20mm Baltic blue leather strap, lug holes make for easy strap changing and comes with its Baltic presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
For me personally, the Silver dial is the best of the lot for the MR01, feels most true to a vintage-inspired watch and works beautifully on essentially any strap you put on the watch! If you are in the market for a smaller-sized modern heritage-inspired watch then I'd highly recommend you at least consider this watch, if you're in doubt book a viewing and come try it on for yourself!
The Brand
Ettiene Malec, a Frenchman, founded Baltic in 2017. The name comes from his father’s birthplace in northern Poland near the Baltic Sea. and his inspiration came after finding a suitcase full of his late father's watches with a notebook full of details about the watches. He soon after started to meet other collectors and started to collect himself. Then, seeing the huge interest in vintage timepieces, he completed a Kickstarter campaign with the Baltic HMS 001 and a Bi-Compax 001. Each watch is hand-assembled in France near Besançon. Today the brand continues to grow through its social media presence and its website, to offer contemporary designed, vintage-inspired timepieces.
