Here we have a now-discontinued 2021 Tudor Prince Date+Day 36mm Steel & Gold, reference 76213, featuring an elegant bi-metal design. The excellent 36mm stainless steel case gently curves over your wrist, with a lug-to-lug length of 43.5mm and a thickness of 10.5mm, ensuring a highly comfortable and versatile fit. Brushed and polished surfaces transition with clean, elegant lines. On the right side, an 18ct yellow gold screw-down crown mirrors the stunning 18ct yellow gold fluted bezel, which holds a flat sapphire crystal above the amazing champagne linen dial. Precise framing is achieved via an outer minute track; gold-toned batons mark the hours, accented by a distinctive day crescent at 12 o’clock and a date window at 3 o’clock, complete with a classic cyclops magnification. Elegant slim baton hands filled with lume are complemented by a sweeping second hand. The dial elements are tied together by an applied Tudor shield at 12 o’clock with “Tudor Prince Date+Day” cleanly printed underneath, while the bottom text anchors the layout. On the reverse, the solid screw-down case back protects an automatic ETA Cal. 2834-2 movement with 25 jewels operating at 28,800 beats per hour. I think a lot of people will be surprised to see 2021 on the paperwork for this watch. At first glance, you'd be forgiven for assuming it came from the late 1990s or early 2000s, but Tudor quietly kept this reference in production for far longer than many realise, only discontinuing it relatively recently. That's a huge part of the appeal for me. You get the classic 36mm proportions, fluted gold bezel, two-tone bracelet and that fantastic champagne linen dial, but in a watch that's considerably younger than its styling would suggest. It also represents fantastic value for money. If you love that classic Rolex/Tudor aesthetic but don't want to spend the money now associated with comparable pieces, there's an awful lot of watch here for the price. Swiss watchmaking company “Veuve de Philippe Hüther”, on behalf of Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex watches, first registered the Tudor trademark in 1926. Wilsdorf took it over himself in 1936. Soon after the Second World War, Hans Wilsdorf, who founded Rolex, knew that it was time for Tudor to have a proper identity of its own. The Tudor Rose started to appear on their dials from this moment. On 6 March 1946, he created the “Montres TUDOR S.A.” company, creating watches for both men and women. Rolex guaranteed the overall design aesthetic, as well as distribution and after-sales service. In 1948, we saw the first Tudor-specific advertisement. A few years later, they introduced the TUDOR Oyster Prince in 1952. Hans Wilsdorf allowed Tudor to use their waterproof Oyster case and the original self-winding Perpetual ’rotor’ movement. This was an exclusive arrangement that benefited both brands. Development soon commenced with the introduction of the TUDOR Oyster Prince Submariner, reference 7922, in 1954. This watch was quickly adopted by the French Navy in 1956. Building on its reputation for robustness in 1961, the Rose was replaced by the shield. Later in 1969, we saw the design changes in Ref. 7016, where, for the first time, square indexes and angular hands nicknamed “Snowflake” allowed for a greater amount of lume to be applied; this was appreciated by the divers of the French Navy. Today, these innovations can be seen in the Black Bay and Pelagos collections. In 1971, Tudor introduced the Oysterdate chronographs nicknamed “Monte-Carlo” due to it resembling a roulette wheel. Celebrating their 50th anniversary in 1996. In that same year, Tudor decided to shed Rolex-signed components such as the cases, crowns and bracelets in favour of Tudor-branded ones. Today, Tudor uses their in-house movements developed initially in 2015 in collaboration with Breitling.
