The Watch
The Swiss luxury watch company Tissot from Le Locle, Switzerland, was established in 1853 by Charles Félicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile. Under Charles-Emile’s direction, they manufactured pocket watches with parts from Russia and the United States. In 1915, the company began producing wristwatches. Between 1920 and 1977, Tissot produced its own movements. In 1930 to survive the 1929 crash and economic crisis they entered into an agreement with Omega to form the SSIH Group which 53 years later became the Swatch Group.
Here we have a Tissot Heritage 1948 Chronograph. Inspired by their heritage chronographs from the 1940s. The 39.5mm polished stainless steel case gently curves over your wrist with elegant twisted lugs. A lug to lug length of 48.5mm and a thickness of 12.5mm gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side, we find the square chronograph pushers and a signed crown. The smooth polished bezel holds a domed Hesalite crystal. The silver dial has a 60-minute track precisely printed. Applied Roman numeral at 12 o’clock with dot markers for the hours is a nice vintage touch. At 3 o’clock we have a 60-second register, at 6 o'clock a 12-hour register, and finally at 9 o’clock a 30-minute register. Each has a concentric circle detailing. Between the 4 and 5, we have a date window. Slender leaf hands are complemented by a tapered chronograph second hand. Text is minimalist with "Tissot Automatique" precisely printed at 12 o’clock. The Tissot logo uses the same font found on their 1940s watches. On the reverse, a screw-down case back that partially shows the movement, deep engraving around the edge and center complete the case back. Inside an Automatic ETA 2894-2, 37 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on a well-suited shell cordovan and also comes with its original 20mm Aligator style leather strap with a signed butterfly clasp and comes with its Tissot presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
A stunning watch that offers, arguably, some of the very best value in the modern chronograph category and really punches way above its weight. Vintage styling in a modern package, all with the modern reliability we come to expect, but all for a super fair price, especially pre-owned!
