The Watch
Here we have a 2021 Synchron Military Diver Reissue Limited Edition of 500 pieces, it is a faithful reissue homage to the original DOXA Army reference 11891-4 of the 1970s, a very rare watch, incorporating vintage styling with modern materials and using CNC Technology to create the case. This watch interestingly brought about DOXA reissuing the Army themselves as a direct response, the 42.5mm brushed C-shaped stainless steel case sits on the wrist like a cushion, it was designed and developed by Urs Eschle who was the product manager for the original Doxa Sub and Jacques Cousteau who adopted it in his Aqualung range, with a lug-to-lug length of 45mm and a case thickness of 14mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side slightly recessed is a large signed screw-down crown with deep knurling for extra grip. The unidirectional 120-click bezel has a saw-like serrated edge for grip and a 60-minute sapphire insert with faux-patina SuperLumiNova coated numerals, holding a domed sapphire crystal above a Black and white high contrast dial. An outer minute track has thick black and white baton indexes inside a black ring and is tipped with faux-patina SuperLumiNova marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a date window, orange framed sword hands infilled with faux-patina SuperLumiNova is complemented by an orange arrow point sweeping second hand. In the upper left hand, we have Synchron and “automatic” printed underneath and in the lower right the Synchron motif and “Military” are printed underneath, completing this faithful reissue of a rare dive tool watch. On the reverse a screw-down case back with the engraved Synchron motif in the centre and the number out of 500 on the outer edge, inside an automatic ETA Cal. 2824-2, 25 jewels, beating at 28,800 Beats per hour, this high-grade “Elabore” movement has hand winding and hacking seconds for your convenience. The watch comes paired with its original 20mm Synchron “beads of rice” bracelet and signed folded clasp, all links provided plus a 20mm rubber strap, Tropic style rubber strap and NATO in the box and the watch comes with its Synchron presentation box and paperwork.
Personal Note
We speak about value for money a lot at KibbleWatches, it's one of the points we focus on when stocking watches, this Synchron perfectly embodies value for money from a "spec sheet" perspective, but also a design and build quality perspective. I wouldn't hesitate on this if you're interested, especially at this price point.
The Brand
Synchron was created in 1968 in Switzerland to bring together a number of brands utilising each brand's expertise and manufacturer resources, it was part of the larger ASUAG holding company and supported Cyma, Doxa and Ernest Borel at that time. Due to the “Quartz Crisis” in the 1970s, ASUAG sold Synchron in 1980 and the name disappeared. Time quickly passed when in 1999 Rick Marei a dive watch collector, and general manager of the DOXA Sub line of watches until 2018 when he left the current owners, brought back the Synchron Group name resurrecting Aquadive, ISOfrane and Tropic strap brands at the same time. Today they are also distributors of Traser and owners of Aquastar since 2020.
