Seikos history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established making wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959).
Here we have a 2021 Seiko Prospex "Great Blue Hole" Special Edition SPB083J1 with a 43mm stainless steel case. Chamfered edges transition polished and brushed surfaces. A lug to lug length of 50mm and a thickness of 13mm gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. At 4 o’clock a screw-down crown. The case is treated with Seiko’s proprietary Diashield coating. A unidirectional 60-minute bezel has deep notches for extra grip and a polished black insert with silver numerals. The flat sapphire crystal is AR coated for excellent viewing angles. A sunburst deep blue dial gives the watch its nickname, you are transported into the depths of the ocean as you rotate your wrist. An outer minute chapter ring with applied disc and obelisk indexes coated in LumiBrite mark the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window. Arrow and sword hands coated in the same luminescence when at 12 o’clock form a rocket, complemented by reversed lollipop sweeping second hand. Text is precisely printed at 12 and 6 respectively. On the reverse, a polished screw-down case back with the Seiko Tsunami in the center. Inside an Automatic Seiko Cal. 6R15, 23 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on its Seiko 20mm Stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding clasp and dive extension, Included in the box is a dive silicon strap with a signed buckle and also comes with its Seiko presentation box and papers.
