The Watch

Here we have a 2021 Nivada Grenchen Chronomaster Broad Arrow Manually Wound, a faithful re-edition of the original Chronomaster from 1963, this versatile dive chronograph is designed for avid seafarers and adventurers and includes many useful complications. The polished and brushed 38mm stainless steel case curves over your wrist with long straight flat-ended drilled lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 46mm and a case thickness of 14mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence, with a vintage aesthetic. Down the right side, we have the piston chronograph pushers and a signed crown in the centre. A no-click bi-directional stainless steel bezel has deep knurling for extra grip and a black anodised aluminium insert with a double scale of 60 minutes and  12-hour which is useful as a second timezone. A double-domed sapphire crystal sits above a matte black dial. The outer Tachymeter surrounds the minute track with baton indexes coated in cream SuperLumiNova marking the hours, at 3 o’clock a 30-minute register with the first 5 minutes in red that is used in Regatta Yachting as a five-minute countdown warning, at 9 o’clock the continuous small seconds. Steel Broad Arrow hands are infilled with cream SuperLumiNova and are complemented by a tapered chronograph hand. At 12 o’clock we have the Nivada Grenchen motif and at 6 o’clock “Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver '' which highlights the watch's versatility, underneath the “L” Swiss which stood for Luminova a nice nod to the original. On the reverse a screw-down case back with the Nivada shield engraved into it, inside a manually wound Sellita SW510 M BH B, 23 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, a cam-operated chronograph, a clone of the 7750. The watch comes paired with a 20mm Nivada Grenchen Beads of Rice polished stainless steel bracelet with a signed fliplock folding clasp, all links are provided, and the watch comes with its Nivada Grenchen presentation box, swing tag and paperwork.

Personal Note

This is the perfect watch for someone who loves vintage but wants something they don't have to worry about and can wear in any situation. You get all the classic design queues, done to an incredible standard and from afar the watch really does look vintage! I wouldn't hesitate on this one if you are interested!

The Brand

Nivada was founded in Grenchen Switzerland as early as 1879, but officially 1926 appears to be its actual foundation as in 1976 they celebrated their 50th anniversary. In 1939, Nivada built up a business deal with the New York-based Croton Watch Company to enable them to import and distribute Nivada watches within the US. This successful partnership would last for many years. Nivada Grenchen was imported and sold in the US under a number of different brand names such as Croton Nivada, Croton Nivada Grenchen, and Croton. During the 1960s and 70s, they were not allowed to use their Nivada name in the USA due to its phonetically sounding similar to Movado, so they used Nivada Grenchen instead. In 2018, two entrepreneurs in watchmaking, Guillaume Laidet, and Remi Chabrat, have decided to revive the Nivada brand with its original legacy and in 2019 they obtained the licence to use the Nivada Grenchen copyright.
