The Watch
Here we have a 2021 Longines Legend Diver Heritage Bronze Green Dial L3.774.1.50.2, part of their Heritage collection, inspired by their 1961 Legend Diver Ref. 7042 with its iconic Super Compressor case designed by case maker Ervin Piquerez and unique rotating inner bezel, which was later adopted by many brands including the Jaeger LeCoultre Polaris and IWC Aquatimer. The 42mm Bronze case curves over your wrist with elegant tapered lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 52mm and a case thickness of 12mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. The Bronze will patina in a unique way over time for that vintage aesthetic. Down the right side we have two bronze crowns, a screw-down crown at 2 o’clock rotates the inner bezel Super Compressor style and at 4 o’clock a screw-down crown to adjust the time, each has crosshatch detailing. A domed sapphire crystal has many layers of AR coating on the inside, sitting above a smokey sunburst green dial, going from black around the edge and bottle green in the center, for a very pleasing effect. A sloping rotating 60-minute dive scale coated in a creamy Super-LumiNova surrounds baton and Arabic 12, 3, 6, and 9 indices marking the hours, coated in the same lume, bronze-coloured arrow, and baton hands are complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand, at 12 o’clock we have the Longines motif and at 6 o’clock “Automatic” completes this vintage-inspired sports dive watch. On the reverse a screw-down Titanium case back with the details of the watch engraved around the edge and an embossed diver in the center, inside an automatic Longines Cal. L888, 21 jewels, 25,200 beats per hour, based on the ETA A31.L11 the movement has hacking and hand winding for your convenience. The watch comes paired with a 22mm brown vintage-style leather strap and a signed Bronze pin buckle and a 22mm green NATO strap with a bronze pin buckle. The watch comes with its Longines presentation box, swing tag, spring bar removal tool, papers, and book.
Personal Note
The Longines Legend Diver is a watch deep in incredible history and this Bronze Green Dial is a wonderful example of when Longines get something really right! They perfectly reflected the history and heritage of the piece whilst bringing it into the modern world with the intense green dial and amazing bronze case, it won't be for everyone but for those that like it I suspect they won't be able to take their eyes off it!
The Brand
Longines was founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz and is considered to be the oldest registered watch brand. The Longines factory was opened in 1867 in Saint-Imier Switzerland. From this date, the name Longines was present on their dials and the winged hourglass was engraved onto their movements. After visiting the Universal Exhibition of 1876 in the United States, Longines became pioneers in mechanised production. In 1880 the brand name was filed with the Federal Office of Intellectual Property; later their logo was registered in 1889. Their first wristwatch with a single pusher the calibre 13.33z was introduced in 1913. They became the official supplier of the International Aeronautical Federation in 1919. Lindbergh, the aviator and adventurer, worked with Longines to create the Hour Angle watch in 1927. Their first self-winding calibre 22A was produced in 1945. With continued innovation and technical achievements, Longines became the official timekeeper for Formula One in 1983 for 10 years. They also in 2009 became the official timekeeper for the French Open at Roland Garros. Purchased in 1971 by ‘Ebauches SA’, Swiss watchmakers SSIH who owned Omega, Tissot and Lemania and ASUAG who owned Certina, Endura, Eterna, Hamilton, Longines, Mido and Rado. were merged in 1983 to become the Swatch Group in 1998.
