The Watch

Here we have a 2021 Kurono Tokyo Chronograph 2 Limited Edition of 500 pieces which sold out in 2 to 3 minutes, the 38mm polished stainless steel case gently curves over your wrist, elegant tapered lugs with a lug-to-lug length of 46.5mm and a case thickness of 14mm ensure a comfortable fit. Down the right side, we have the piston-style chronograph pushers and a large crown with deep knurling for extra grip in the centre. A smooth polished bezel holds a high curvature sapphire crystal above a dark brown and black dial, the outer Telemetre scale is precisely printed in silver with the minutes track running underneath again in silver. The copper rings incorporate the silver hour pips and a Tachymeter running around the inner ring, bisecting the rings we have the bicompax registers outlined in silver and finished with a concentric guilloche pattern at 3 o’clock the continuous seconds and at 9 o’clock the 30-minute counter complete with their 'Kyudo' arrow hands. Beautifully balanced with the combination of the different hues on the dial they have really captured the vintage Art Deco aesthetic. Leaf and syringe hands complemented by a diamond counterweighted chronograph hand, text is uncluttered with the Kurono Tokyo motif at 12 o’clock and Automatic Chronograph at 6 o’clock complete this dynamic dial. On the reverse a screw-down case back with the brand motif and details of the designer engraved into it, inside an automatic Seiko Cal. NE86A, 34 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, this is a true workhorse flagship column-wheel chronograph movement made by Seiko. The watch comes fitted on a 20mm leather strap with a signed buckle and comes with its Kurono Tokyo presentation box and papers.

Personal Note

2022 has been the year of Kurono Tokyo, we have seen the brand continue to rise in popularity and the prices continue to climb on the secondary market, that has slowed down a little and now prices seem to be settling which is great to see as it means collectors can start to pick them up for sensible prices, like this one. Feel free to book an appointment and come try it on yourself.

The Brand

Hajime Asaoka founded Kurono Tokyo in 2019, he is a Japanese watchmaker, one of only two members of AHCI (AHCI — Académie horlogère des créateurs indépendants). Academy of independent watch artists, since 2015, renowned for very low production handcrafted watches that sell for upwards of £120,000. He decided to offer a more affordable timepiece with the same DNA as his more bespoke watches, each watch is offered in limited numbers and in the case of the Chronograph 2 was offered for only 10 minutes and was sold out in 2 to 3 minutes. Production is controlled through Precision Watch Tokyo Co.Ltd, the very same company that Hajime Asaoka uses for his handmade creations.
