The Watch

Hemel was founded by Marvin Menke a specialist in product branding, photography, and packaging. Based in New York City the brand saw its launch in 2012. He spent a short time working at Swatch while studying at F.I.T. Hemel was originally meant as a gift to his clients but he was persuaded by his colleagues after showing them his concept to bring it to market. Using the internet to reach the maximum amount of eyes on his idea the Hemel brand was born. Hemel is the Dutch word for Sky which is his constant inspiration when designing. Today they have a strong partnership and licensing agreement with the United States Air Force.

Here we have a 2021 Hemel Air League ST19 Chronograph 2020 Edition with a 42mm polished stainless steel case. Marvin Menke allowed the growing community on the League of Microbrands Facebook Group page to be part of the development of this watch voting and debating design decisions which Hemel would then include in the finished watch. Taking its inspiration from the iconic Dodane/Breguet Type 20/21 chronographs. The elegantly tapered lugs have a lug to lug length of 49mm and a thickness of 13mm ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. Down the right side, we have the chronograph pushers and a crown in the center. The stainless steel bezel has a ceramic 60-minute insert with batons and numerals at 15, 30, 45. Coated in C3 SuperLuminova. A domed sapphire crystal AR coated sits above a matte black dial. An outer Tachymeter scale with an inner 60-minute scale IS precisely printed. Large Arabic numerals coated in C3 SuperLuminova mark the hours. At 3 o’clock a 30-minute register and at 9 o’clock 60-second register. Text is precisely printed on the dial. Elegant syringe hands are coated in the same C3 SuperLuminova for that vintage aesthetic. On the reverse, a screw-down exhibition case back with League of Microbrands and Special edition engraved around its edge. Inside a Manually Wound Seagull ST19, 22 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour. Based on the Venus 175 movement. The watch comes fitted on a 22mm original leather strap.

Personal Note

More and more brands are starting to use the ST19 and the stigma around its reliability has certainly gotten better over the years, it is a great movement and super affordable offering a lot of value for a manually wound Chronograph.
