The Watch
Here we have a 2021 Habring² Erwin 'Star' SJX Limited Edition of 29/50 pieces.
This beautiful collaboration took almost three years to design and celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the online publication SJX Watches, founded by Jiaxian Su from Singapore, who started a personal blog in 2011, writing about all things horology, he has also been a freelance journalist, this watch is inspired by the Star dial watches such as the Rolex ref. 6088 “Galaxy” of the 1950s, which is Su’s favourite period. The 38.5mm round polished and brushed stainless steel case elegantly sits on your wrist with tapered drilled lugs, and its curved brushed flanks lead to a lug-to-lug length of 45mm and a case thickness of 10mm, ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side, there is a deep-knurled crown. The smooth, polished bezel holds a flat sapphire crystal above a stunning blue dial. An outer minute track in gold-powder lacquer surrounds applied stamped stars and dagger indexes, made from gilded brass, filled with Super-LumiNova, diamond-cut facets perfectly polished mark the hours, in the centre Dauphine hands stamped from gilded brass, filled with Super-LumiNova and diamond-cut perfectly polished to reflect the light as you rotate your wrist, complemented by a skeletonised cut out diamond counter weighted deadbeat/jumping seconds hand, at 12 we have the Habring² motif in gold-powder completing this vintage-inspired limited collaboration timepiece. On the reverse, a polished screw-down exhibition case back, deeply engraved with SJX and 29/50, inside a manually wound Habring Cal. A11S, 21 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour. This in-house movement has the deadbeat/jumping-second module that ticks once every second, developed from the Valjoux 7750 and 7760 movements, it is made up of 126 parts, with 65 being serviceable. The balance springs are made to Chronometer standards by the Austrian-based Carl Haas, decorated by hand with perlage and blued screws. It comes paired with its original 20 mm SJX dark blue leather strap and signed buckle, and this watch is sold with an original Habring² box & Habring paperwork.
Personal Note
This fantastic offering is the perfect example of what can happen when two great companies come together from different sides of the industry. This is the Erwin 'Star' by Habring² in partnership with SJX, limited to just 50 pieces total, and this example here is in like-new condition. The blue dial contrasted against the gold indices and hands is effortlessly executed, as is the manually wound Habring² Cal. A11s powers this watch, beautiful to look at and features a deadbeat/jumping second. Habring² know how to create a beautiful and mechanically impressive watch. I would not hesitate to add this gem to your collection today, whilst you can!
The Brand
In 1997, Maria and Richard Habring embarked on their horological journey by founding Habring² in the quaint town of Volkermarkt, Austria. Richard Habring’s passion for watchmaking ignited at IWC, where he honed his craft under the esteemed mentorship of Günter Blümlein. He played a pivotal role in the innovative development of the double chronograph—a sophisticated mechanism that would later become a hallmark of precision in watchmaking. With the dedication and support of his wife, Maria, they set out to create timepieces that proudly reflect the rich tradition of Austrian horology. Their journey truly began in 2005 when Habring² introduced a groundbreaking standard for seconds, delivering an ingenious mechanism for jumping seconds that redefined accuracy in timekeeping. By 2007, their commitment to innovation bore fruit as they became the first watch manufacturer to unveil a movement featuring deadbeat seconds. Their craftsmanship was recognised in November 2013 when they celebrated a prestigious victory at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, winning in the “La Petite Aiguille” category—a notable achievement for the boutique brand. Initially, the Habring² model lineup grew modestly by introducing one new model each year, reflecting their focus on quality over quantity. In 2014, a special collaboration with Horlogerie-Suisse.com resulted in a highly exclusive edition of the Habring² Doppel 3 split-second chronograph, further showcasing their artistry. Today, Habring² is celebrated for its meticulous craftsmanship, producing just 50 exquisite timepieces annually. The collection features a diverse array of models: the Josef Regulator, known for its unique time display; the Oskar moonphase, which elegantly tracks lunar phases; the minimalist yet refined Felix; the innovative jumping second Erwin; the sophisticated Chrono-Felix; the practical 24-hour Smart Felix; the inspiring Doppel 38 split-second chronograph; and the intricately designed Foudroyante-Felix, known for its deadbeat seconds. Each watch is a labour of love, contributing to the legacy of fine watchmaking that Habring² proudly continues to cultivate.
