The Watch

Here we have a 2021 Doxa SUB 300 Aquamarine Blue 821.10.241.1, the 43mm tonneau-shaped stainless steel case sits on the wrist like a cushion, it was designed and developed by Urs Eschle who was the product manager for the original Doxa Sub, with polished sides and brushed top surfaces transition with crisp edges towards the stubby lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 45.5mm and a case thickness of 13mm gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. At 3 o’clock a screw-down crown that fits recessed into the side of the case for protection. The unidirectional bezel has the U.S. Navy no decompression scales, with an outer depth scale in Aquamarine Blue and the minute scale in black, to allow divers to gauge how much air was left in their tanks. The boxed sapphire crystal sits above the Aquamarine Blue dial, large double baton indexes with lume down their centres mark the hours, and at 3 o’clock a framed date window. A small black hour hand with a larger black minute hand is complemented by a black second hand with a lume-filled square counterweight. A crosshair on the dial has text on the upper left side with “DOXA” and “automatic” printed, and on the lower right side, “SUB 300” and “Aquamarine”. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the DOXA motif in bas-relief in the centre, inside automatic Sellita SW200, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on a 20mm stainless steel “beads of rice” bracelet with brushed and polished finishing, secured with screws and has a folding signed clasp with a dive extension, the watch also comes with its Doxa presentation box and booklets.

Personal Note

This model feels like the perfect blend between the "Old and the New", you have the classic SUB 300 from Doxa which dates back many years as a design, but also as a tool, and then you have this new phenomenon of "Tiffany" blue or vibrant blue that we see here, this is both worlds merged together and I have to admit, I'm not mad at it and I do actually like it on the wrist! I do feel this will either be a "love it or hate it" situation for most and that's perfectly ok, if you love it, don't miss out!

The Brand

Doxa was established in 1889 in Le Locle Switzerland by Georges Ducommun. In 1921 Doxa became the supplier of dash clocks to Bugatti. In 1925 Georges became the vice president of the Swiss Horology Society. 1936 saw Georges' passing and the company was now in the hands of son-in-law Jaques Nardin the grandson of Ulysse Nardin. In 1944 the company was renamed “Manufacture des Montre DOXA”. The company was finally sold in 1997 to the Jenny family, transferring their headquarters to Bienne Switzerland.
