The Watch

Citizen founded the Shokosha Watch Research Institute in 1918. The name originates from a pocket watch it produced in 1924. The Mayor of Tokyo, Mr Shimpei Goto, named the watch "CITIZEN", in the hopes the watch would become a worldwide success. In 1930 the name Citizen Watch Company was introduced. In 1959, Citizen launched Japan’s first fully waterproof watch, the Parawater. During the “quartz crisis” they developed the Eco-Drive movement in 1976. This was one of the first solar-powered watches on the market. Continuing to innovate and expand its reach In 1993, Citizen introduced the world’s first multi-band atomic watch. It uses the Atomic clocks around the world to synchronise to within two nanoseconds per day. Citizen make the cases, the dial, the hands, and the movement in their Iida factory in Japan. Today the Citizen Group owns brands such as Alpina, Arnold & Son.

Here we have a 2021 Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster with a 40mm Monobloc (to get to the movement you have to go through the front) brushed Titanium case coated in a scratch-resistant layer. A slight curve to the case with a case thickness of 11.5mm and a lug-to-lug of 45.5mm gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side, we have a screw-down crown with deep knurling protected by crown guards. The smooth bezel has a polished bevel edge and brushed top surfaces that transition with crisp edges. A flat sapphire crystal AR coated sits above a blue dial. An outer minute chapter ring with large Arabic numeral indexes, baton markers and an inverted triangle at 12 o’clock mark the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window. Long arrow and sword hands are complemented by a lollipop counterweighted second hand. The numerals and hands are coated in luminance. This rugged military-inspired dive watch has all the attributes necessary for any adventure the wearer wishes to endeavour. The text is precisely printed on the dial with the Promaster motif under the hands. On the reverse is a flat back with the details of the watch placed around its edge. Inside a Citizen Eco-Drive (which means it is solar-powered absorbing light through the dial of the watch). The watch comes fitted on its original 20mm kevlar strap with a signed buckle and comes with its Citizen presentation box but NO paperwork.

Personal Note

I've always felt these Promaster's by Citizen are the perfect answer for those who aren't a fan of the G-Shocks. I own a G-Shock but can't get on with it, I'm just not a fan on the wrist, but this Promaster looks fantastic on the wrist, gives me all I need which is the time and is built like an absolute tank able to take any beating you could possible throw its way. I'd say pick this up if you need that go anywhere, do anything watch but don't want a G-Shock!
