Here we have a 2020s Studio Underd0g 02SERIES Midnight, inspired by the military field watches of the 1940s, featuring a brushed 37mm stainless steel case that gently curves over your wrist with tapered drilled lugs, its curved flanks lead to a lug-to-lug length of 46mm and a case thickness of 12mm, ensuring a comfortable fit. On the right side is a signed coin-edged crown. A smooth, polished bezel holds a domed sapphire crystal above a superbly crafted black sandwich brass base coated in seven layers of Super-LumiNova pigment. The transparent 1mm sapphire disc sits above the lower base plate, secured by two screws featuring a printed outer minute rail track that surrounds Arabic numerals, creating a shadow on the base layer that marks the hours and gives the impression that they are floating above the dial. Slender baton hands filled with Super-LumiNova are complemented by a tapered, sweeping second hand. At noon, we have the Studio Underd0g motif, and at 6 o’clock, “Mechanical Hand Winding" completes this stunning field watch. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the details of the watch around its edge and an embossed jellyfish in the centre, inside a manually wound Sellita SW210-1, 19 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour. It comes paired with an 18mm Black vintage-style quick-release strap, handmade by The Strap Tailor, and a signed pin buckle, plus an 18mm NATO strap. Richard Benc founded Studio Underd0g in March 2020 whilst still under lockdown due to COVID-19 in the UK. He had studied product design at the University of Nottingham. It was during this time that he started to imagine his own line of watches. Working in the watch industry for over 5 years, he has worked on many designs. Releasing his ideas online, he began to gain confidence that a funky design and colour combination was the way to go. The brand name came about as he saw himself as a small fish in a large sea with much bigger ideas and aspirations. He replaced the small “o” in Underdog with a “0”, which is now part of their brand identity. Inspired, he created a watch that is both fun and playful, using colour, textures and design cues to create a design that stands out from the crowd. Releasing four models, each with its own unique design and using a well-established Seagull ST-190 movement. Studio Underd0g was born with the watches selling on a pre-order basis, which was the only way Richard could afford to produce the watches. His next generation of watches will be assembled in the UK, and he will be using UK-sourced suppliers and manufacturers such as David @thestraptailor.com.
