The Watch

Here we have a 2020 Vulcain Cricket 50s Presidents Manual X10X51 inspired by their watches from the 1950s and 60s and seen worn by US Presidents Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon Johnson over that time period. The elegant chamfered lines of the brushed and polished 42mm stainless steel case gently curve over your wrist with flat-ended tapered lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 49mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. Down the right side, we have the alarm pusher, when you push it in it pushes out the crown for you to set the alarm in 10-minute intervals using the minutes ring around the outside of the dial, to wind the alarm you rotate the crown in its neutral position anticlockwise and clockwise to wind the watch, you can only set the time clockwise, the crown has the characteristic cross-hatch pattern engraved into it. The polished smooth bezel holds a domed sapphire crystal above a Tobacco-coloured dial, the outer ring is made up of 10-minute intervals surrounding applied Rhodium-toned 12, 3, and 9 Arabic numerals and baton indexes marking the hours, at 6 o’clock a framed date window, the handset consists of an arrow point alarm hand, steel Dauphines hands complemented by a tapered second hand. At 12 o’clock we have the Vulcain motif and at 6 o’clock “Cricket” in reference to the distinctive sound the alarm makes. On the reverse, a screwed-down exhibition case back, inside a manually wound Vulcain Cal. V-11, 30 jewels is a double barrel movement beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour and made up of 199 components, decorated in nickel coating with blued screws, the Exactomatic system was patented in 1946 and gives the movement better accuracy and regulation. The watch comes fitted on its 22mm Alligator strap plus an additional leather strap in the box and the watch comes with its Vulcain presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

This is our first modern Vulcain Cricket and I have been interested in getting one in for some time, with the rerelease of the models it is always great to see how they adapt the past to modern standards and Vulcain has not disappointed! This model is fantastic and the alarm is loud and distinct, as the Cricket always was. If you are unsure, book an appointment and see it for yourself!

The Brand

Vulcain was founded in 1858 in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland. by Jacque Ditisheim and his three sons. Specialising in pocket watches they quickly branched out into wristwatches for military use during the 1940s. After five years of research and development, they created the famous Cal. 120 Cricket movement which was released in 1947. In 1988 they were approached by Finnish jeweller Keijo Paajanen who suggested that they start again by offering their Cricket timepiece to American Presidents during their state visits. Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George Bush Sr all received one. Refusing to jump on the Quartz bandwagon, they relaunched themselves in 2001 with the Cal. V21. An Alarm, mechanical movement.
