The Watch

Here we have a 2020 Swatch Flymagic Burgundy/Red YHS101 Limited to 500 pieces this model range has been developed with the sole purpose of highlighting a truly innovative collection of mechanical timepieces using the non-magnetic Nivachron hairspring, made from a Titanium alloy and incorporates a very necessary additional 15 components to their Sistem51 movement in order for it to work correctly. The 45mm tonneau-shaped stainless steel case curves over your wrist with polished and brushed surfaces that transition with crisp lines towards the tapered four lugs. A polished chamfered edge flows around the flanks of the case leading to a lug-to-lug length of 55.5mm and a case thickness of 14.5mm giving the watch an impressive and substantial wrist presence. On the right side is a slightly recessed crown with deep knurling for extra grip. The prominent polished bezel has deep grooves cut into it creating an interesting profile holding a flat sapphire crystal AR coated above a skeletonised Burgundy/Red dial with the inverted movement showing through a burgundy and transparent rotor. The applied triangular indexes float above the movement infilled with Super-LumiNova marking the hours. The ladder-style hands have tips infilled with the same luminance and at 12 o’clock we have sub-seconds that run counterclockwise just as they would if we were looking at it from behind, a unique twist and interesting talking point. On the centre disc, you will find the number out of 500 engraved into it. The movement is still completely assembled by robots, the automatic Swatch Flymagic movement is based on the Sistem51 with an additional 15 components and the innovative non-magnetic Nivachron hairspring made from a Titanium alloy. The watch comes with one Swatch rubber strap and two Swatch calf leather straps in the box and the watch comes with its Swatch presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

Swatch has been making the rounds with the "Moonswatch" and there's been no avoiding it, but before that craze, they mastered the Sistem 51 which took collectors by storm and still do to this day, they then took it a step further with the Flymagic! Far from a watch for everyone, but for those who do like it, they absolutely love it! That is what watches are about and especially Swatch, making something fun and unique, this is exactly that.

The Brand

Swatch is a subsidiary of the Swatch Group and was founded in 1983 by Ernst Thomke, Elmar Mock, and Jacques Müller as a direct response to the Quartz crisis during the 1970s and early Eighties. Its design aesthetic was intended to be fun and yet disposable. In 1997 they opened 60 stores worldwide; today there are over 3,000. The combination of aggressive marketing and efficient manufacturing using modern technologies such as ultrasonic welding put Swatch firmly on the map for affordable fun timepieces.
