The Watch
Here we have the distinctive 2020 Seiko Prospex Samurai Automatic Black & Blue SRPD09. As part of the Save the Ocean range, Seiko gave a portion of the proceeds from the original sale to Fabien Cousteau’s Ocean Learning Centre, a non-profit organisation dedicated to learning and marine conservation. The 43.5mm stainless steel cushion case has a gunmetal hardened coating and the characteristic aggressively angled sides and lugs that curve over your wrist for that comfortable fit. On the right side, a protected screw-down crown with knurling for extra grip. A knurled-edged bezel has a dive insert (with the first 15 minutes of the countdown bezel picked out in blue). On the right side, is a screw-down crown. Protected by the dive bezel, its flat Hardlex crystal is a specially hardened mineral glass manufactured by Seiko. A blue outer minute chapter ring surrounds a graduated black and blue dial that has a gradient from light to dark, just like the ocean depths, a nice touch. Horizontal lines highlight this gradient and catch the light in an interesting way. The applied indexes are broad and coated in LumiBrite. At 3 o’clock, a date window. The arrow hands, when in the 12 o'clock position, they resemble a rocket and are coated in LumiBrite and have a sweeping second hand. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the Seiko tsunami wave embossed in the centre, inside an automatic Seiko 4R35, 23 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour, this workhorse movement has hacking seconds and hand winding for your convenience. It comes paired with its original Seiko 22mm blue silicon strap and signed pin buckle, and it comes with its Seiko presentation box, swing tag and papers.
Personal Note
It truly is difficult to beat Seiko's value when it comes to affordable, mechanical, dive watches like this Seiko Prospex Samurai Automatic Black & Blue, reference SRPD09, which can be had under £300. This is a great choice for a more stealthy watch with its black coating, the contrast of the blue works perfectly and elevates this watch far beyond its price point. I would not hesitate to add this watch to your collection today!
The Brand
Seiko's history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established to make wall clocks, and 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924, the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956, Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph monopusher. Not stopping there, Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch, the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Calibre 6217, which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
