The Watch
Seikos history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established making wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) established in 1937. Seiko listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co. Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959).
In 2020 Seiko introduced the “King turtle range, the SRPE03 Black Bezel and Black Dial & SRPE05 Black Bezel and Green dial. Its dimensions are the same as the original Turtle. A 45mm stainless steel cushion case with a lug to lug of 47mm and a thickness of 14mm ensures a comfortable fit on the wrist. At 4 o’clock a large screw-down crown. The case has brushed tops and polished sides that transition with crisp lines. The stainless steel bezel now has a black ceramic dive insert, the outer edge has more aggressive knurling making it much easier to grip. The luminescence has also been upgraded for a brighter charge. A flat sapphire crystal upgrades from the usual Hardlex crystal. Controversially the crystal now has a cyclops magnification above the day/date window at 3 o’clock. Seiko is confident with its water and pressure resistance. The green waffle dial adds a real quality boost over a standard Turtle, applied disc and trapezoid indexes are coated in LumiBrite. Broad hands are coated in LumiBrite with a yellow lollipop counterbalance centre seconds hand. The text is precisely printed in white with a yellow “Divers 200m” matching the second’s hand. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with an embossed Seiko Tsunami in the centre. Inside an Automatic Seiko Cal. 4R36, 24 jewels, 21600 beats per hour. A powerhouse of movement first introduced in 2011. The watch comes fitted on a Seiko 22mm green rubber strap with a signed buckle and keeper. Comes with its Seiko presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
This is my first "King Turtle" and being a huge fan of the original Turtles I was originally a sceptic of this model and its upgrades plus its price increase, but not having one in hand I can safely say it is all worth it! The ceramic bezel just pops against the new coloured and textured dials, plus a sapphire crystal is always welcome.
