The Watch
Seikos history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established making wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) established in 1937. Seiko listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co. Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959).
Our Seiko Prospex Diver SPB143 takes its inspiration from the ref: 6217-8000, commonly known as the 62MAS, launched in 1965. It is Seiko’s first dive watch, which helped to shape all future dive watches. A contemporary 40.5mm tonneau stainless steel case with stubby flat-ended lugs. With the lug to lug length of 47mm and a thickness of 14mm, the watch has excellent wrist presence. On the right side a large screw-down crown. The case is treated to Seiko's Dia-Shield, hardening, a super-hard, scratch-resistant coating. A 120-click unidirectional dive bezel with a black and Dia-Shield-coated stainless steel insert has deep knurling for increased grip. A slightly domed sapphire crystal AR coated on the inside sits above a sunburst grey dial that goes from light grey to black as you rotate your wrist. Large applied baton indexes are coated in Seiko LumiBrite for a bright green when fully charged. At 3 o’clock a date window. Broad baton hands have LumiBrite infill. The second’s hand has a square counterweight filled with LumiBrite. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the Seiko Tsunami in the center. Inside an Automatic Seiko Cal. 6R35, 24 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour. The 6R35 represents the top of the “R” series movements with both hacking and hand winding and an impressive 70 Hour power reserve. The watch comes fitted on a Seiko 20mm stainless steel bracelet with solid end links, pin, and collar sizing adjustment, a signed clasp, and a dive extension. Comes with a complete Seiko box and papers.
Personal Note
There is no question that "Value" is a word that needs to be used when describing this Seiko reference, when looking on a spec sheet it's hard to believe this is a sub £1000 watch! I guess others agree as this sold before it even landed on the website.
