The Watch

Here we have a 2020 Seiko Presage Tribute to 1964 SPB129J1 a Limited Edition of 1964 pieces, released in 2019 it celebrated the 55th Anniversary of Japan's very first Chronograph, the 1964 Seiko Crown Chronograph, the case and dial pay homage to that watch recreating a modern interpretation of this classic timepiece. The 41mm brushed stainless steel case curves over your wrist towards the angular tapered flat-ended lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 48mm and a case thickness of 11mm ensures a comfortable fit. On the right side is a signed screw-down crown with deep knurling for extra grip. The black 60-minute bezel has the same markings and grip as the original holding a domed sapphire crystal AR coated on the inside above a striking two-tone Forest Green with a blue-ring dial, an outer minutes and seconds track is precisely executed with small Arabic numerals and applied double-faceted indexes complete with an inner lume pip marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window, elegant Dauphine hands are infilled with LumiBrite and are complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. At 12 o’clock we have the applied Seikomotif and at 6 o’clock “Presage Automatic” completes this vintage-inspired versatile sports watch. On the reverse a screw-down case back with “Seiko Limited Edition / 1964 etched into it, inside an automatic Seiko Cal. 6R35, 24 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour. The watch comes paired with its 20mm Seiko three-link brushed stainless steel bracelet with a signed folded clasp, all links are provided, and the watch comes with its Seiko presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

The dial colour of this model is what instantly drew me in, they call it "Forest Green", in some lights its a vibrant mint green and in others a dark green, it truly does play with the light and offers a unique wearing experience. You can never really go wrong with a Seiko, they are built to last and look great, all without breaking the bank, so once pre-owned, they become even better value propositions to be purchased and enjoyed!

The Brand

Seikos' history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established to make wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956 Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph monopusher. Not stopping there Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217 which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches and many more.
