The Watch

Here we have a 2020 Rolex Sky-Dweller Black on Oyster Bracelet 326934 introduced in 2012 it is one of their most complicated timepieces, the 42mm Oystersteel case has a curve that floats over your wrist with a lug-to-lug length of 50mm and a case thickness of 14mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. Polished and brushed surfaces transition with crisp edges, and on the right side is a signed screw-down crown. The White Gold Fluted Ring Command Bezel rotates to three positions depending on whether you want to change the date, local time or second-time zone, all with the crown in its first-notch position. Position 1 is for setting the Month and Date, Position 2 is used for setting the local time and Position 3 is used for setting the GMT disc. Remember to set the GMT before setting your local time. A flat sapphire crystal sits above the striking black dial, this combination of steel and white gold is called Rolesor which Rolex has trademarked since 1933. An outer Rolex Rehaut surrounds a minute track with lume plots, applied disc and baton indexes are filled with Chromalight luminance, and at 3 o’clock a Saros annual calendar date window with cyclops magnification, this clever system allows the wearer to only need to adjust once a year at the end of February which has either 28 or 29 days. An off-centre 24-hour disc has a red inverted triangle, perfect for when travelling. The red rectangle indicates the Month. The Baton's hands are also filled with Chromalight complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. At 12 o’clock an applied Rolex coronet with the text precisely executed underneath, at 6 o’clock we have “Sky-Dweller Oyster Perpetual” followed by “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified”. On the reverse, a coined-edged screw-down case back, inside an automatic Rolex Cal. 9001, 40 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, this precision movement is based on their Rolex 3135 and is Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) Certified. The watch comes fitted on its 20mm Rolex Oyster bracelet with a signed flip-lock Oysterclasp, and the watch also comes with its Rolex presentation box, swing tag and papers.

This is the first Sky-Dweller I have stocked and I am blown away by how well it wears on the wrist despite the larger dimensions, on paper I always felt this watch was too big for my 7-inch wrist, but in actuality, I can get away with it. The complication is fantastic and super simple to use once you understand how to use it too. I wouldn't hesitate to add one of these to your collection if you want the Datejust look, but bigger and with a more impressive complication!

In 1905, German-born Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis set up a company in London that imported Swiss movements which were installed in British cases and sold to jewellers who put their names on the dials. Recognising the potential for their brand, Wilsdorf created the brand name Rolex in 1908. In 1910, a Rolex became the first wristwatch to carry the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, awarded by the Official Watch Rating Centre in Bienne, Switzerland. Demand for Rolex watches rose swiftly, and British taxes on the Swiss movements Rolex used prompted Wilsdorf to move the business to Geneva, Switzerland, in 1919. With production costs lowered, Wilsdorf quickly set out to solve the age-old problem of moisture and dust entering a watch case and damaging the movement. The Rolex watchmakers came up with a fully sealed watch case, which Wilsdorf named the Oyster, and released to an appreciative audience in 1926. In 1931, Rolex introduced the first automatic winding wristwatch, giving it the legendary name Oyster Perpetual. In 1945, they released the Datejust. The Datejust was the first watch to have the date jump instantaneously at midnight. The 1950s saw a whole lot of releases such as the Air-King (1958), the Explorer (1953), the Submariner (1953), the GMT Master (1955), the Day-Date (1956), the electromagnetic field resistant Milgauss (1956), the Lady-Datejust (1957) and the first Deep Sea model (1960). Wilsdorf’s death in 1960, saw ownership of Rolex S.A. (a collection of sub-companies) passed to the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation which was founded by Wilsdorf in 1945, the mission of which is simply to sustain Rolex S.A. indefinitely.
