Oris was founded by Paul Cattin and George Christian in the Swiss town of Hölstein. They bought a factory and signed a contract with the mayor in 1904. Initially making pocket watches in 1925 they started to add bracelets to their pocket watches which soon transitioned into the wristwatch. By 1929, they had a total of six factories. At the end of the 1960s, Oris became one of the largest watch companies in the world, producing approximately 1.2 million timepieces a year. In 1982 Dr Rolf Portmann and Ulrich W. Herzog led a management buyout from Swatch Group. Unhappy with the way the Group was running things. Oris SA was born as an independent Swiss watch brand. 2002 saw their distinctive Red Rotor become an Oris registered Trademark.
Our 2020 Oris Divers Sixty-Five "Maxi" Topper Edition is a collaboration between Oris and Topper fine jewellers. In 1965 Toppers had two stores in Modesto and Merced, California. The design is their interpretation of what an Oris 65 would have looked like if it was on their shelves in 1965. The watch is limited to 165 pieces. The 42mm stainless steel case gently curves over your wrist towards the tapered lugs. A lug to lug length of 50.5mm and a case thickness of 13mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a signed screw-down crown. The stainless steel unidirectional bezel has a black aluminum 60-minute insert with an orange dot inside the inverted triangle at 12 o’clock. The domed sapphire crystal sits above a black dial. Stylised 12, 3, 6, and 9 surrounded by SuperLuminova and painted baton indexes mark the hours. An inner minute track has lume pips at the hours. Sword hands complemented by an orange-tipped sweeping second hand coated in SuperLuminova. Text is precisely printed at 12 and 6 respectively. On the reverse a screw-down case back. Inside an Automatic Oris Cal. 733, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour based on the Sellita SW200-1 modified with the removal of the calendar position.
