The Watch
Here we have a 2020 Breitling Superocean Heritage B20 44 Steel & 18ct Rose Gold UB2030 with its curvaceous 44mm brushed and polished stainless steel case that curves over your wrist with thick, tapered, flat-ended lugs. As part of their Heritage range, this watch takes many design cues from their 1957 Superocean, which was their first 200m dive watch. The polished portions of the case have distinctive crisp lines leading to a lug-to-lug length of 54mm and a case thickness of 14mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a stepped signed twin gasket screw-down crown with deep knurling for grip and the embossed “B”. The unidirectional bezel has a half-minute ratchet setting and a deep knurled 18ct Rose Gold edge with a black ceramic inlay with recessed Rose Gold markings holding a slightly domed sapphire crystal AR coated on both sides above a matte black dial. An outer 60-minute track with lume pips surrounding 18ct Rose Gold applied baton indexes marking the hours at 6 o’clock, a framed date window, elegant 18ct Rose Gold arrow and sword hands are filled with Super-LumiNova and complemented by an 18ct Rose Gold tapered second hand, at 12 o’clock we have the applied 18ct Rose Gold “B” Breitling motif “Officiellement Certifie” printed underneath and at 6 o’clock “Superocean Automatic 200m/660ft” completes this sophisticated sports dive watch. On the reverse, a screw-down solid case back engraved with the details of the watch around its edge and the Breitling motif in the centre, inside an automatic Breitling Cal. B20, 26 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, introduced in 2017 and based on the in-house Tudor MT5612. It comes paired with its adjustable 22mm black rubber strap secured by a polished push-button deployant clasp with dive extension and comes with its Breitling presentation box and paperwork; the cushion from the box is missing.
Personal Note
This Breitling Superocean Heritage B20 isn't for the faint of heart at 44mm and cased in stainless steel and 18ct rose gold, but if you have the wrist to pull it off, this is a serious gem at a great price. Blending both modern performance and build quality with the iconic vintage-inspired design, the Superocean Heritage has become a popular model in the modern Breitling catalogue. Powered by the automatic Breitling Calibre B20, a movement based on the Tudor MT5612, it boasts an impressive 70-hour power reserve. I would not hesitate to book an appointment to see this one in the metal for yourself!
The Brand
Breitling was established in 1884 by Leon Breitling in the Swiss Jura Mountains. In 1915, Gaston Breitling introduced a pusher at 2 o’clock to start, stop and reset the chronograph. Leon later moved the reset to a pusher at 4 o’clock. In 1939, Breitling shipped a huge quantity of chronographs to the Royal Air Force. During the war with Germany surrounding Switzerland, Leon and some friends created a makeshift runway near their factory. Planes would use the car's headlights as a guide to land. Once on the ground, they were quickly loaded, taking off before the Germans knew what was going on. They introduced the “Navitimer,” a navigation computer, in 1952, which was used to calculate a flight plan. In 1969, they collaborated with Heuer, Burne, and Dubois-Depraz on a top-secret project called Project 99. Together, they developed one of the first self-winding chronograph movements. Breitling stands for high precision, outstanding performance, and functionality. During the early days of space exploration, Lt. Commander Scott Carpenter went around the earth three times whilst wearing a modified Navitimer. In 2017, they were sold to CVC Capital Partners, Europe's largest private equity firm. Breitling created their in-house movements, which were co-developed initially in 2015 in collaboration with Tudor and Chanel as part of their Kenissi movement range, which you can also find in Chanel, Norqain, Fortis, and Tag Heuer.
