Here we have a 2020 Aquastar Deepstar Chronograph Re-Edition 40.5mm. This watch's design draws inspiration from the groundbreaking, patented 1965 Aquastar Deepstar, a legendary instrument famously worn by oceanographer Jacques Cousteau and the divers of the Calypso. The 40.5mm 316L stainless steel skin-diver case curves over your wrist, scaling up the historic mid-century proportions into a commanding, modern stance. A lug-to-lug length of 51mm and a robust case thickness of 16.5mm give the watch an impressive, tool-oriented presence. Satin-brushed and polished surfaces transition with crisp, utilitarian lines. On the right side, traditional pump chronograph pushers flank a signed screw-down crown, engineered to operate safely underwater. The characteristic patented bidirectional rotating bezel features a dual-scale design on a ceramic bearing, combining an inner 60-minute dive timer with an outer countdown track to calculate decompression times for safe, repetitive dives in accordance with official French Navy tables. The highly domed sapphire crystal, triple-coated with AR on the inside, is set above a mesmerising sunburst dial that delivers exceptional underwater legibility. An outer minute track is precisely marked, complemented by applied stainless-steel markers filled with old-light Radium Super-LumiNova for a warm, vintage glow. Staying true to the original layout, the dial features a striking, asymmetric "Mono-Compax" layout. At 3 o’clock, a massive, oversized silver 30-minute register tracks elapsed time, while at 9 o’clock, a unique, diamond-shaped running indicator serves as a subtle visual cue that the movement is running. The central hours, minutes, and sweeping chronograph hands mirror the original handset with matching luminescent accents. On the reverse, a solid, screw-down stainless steel case back is deeply decorated with the identical geometric insignia found on the vintage 1960s models, securing an upgraded professional depth rating of 200 metres (20 ATM). Inside beats the Automatic La Joux-Perret x Valjoux Cal. 7750, a premium, Swiss-made manufacture movement extensively modified into a high-end column-wheel mechanical chronograph. Running at 28,800 vibrations per hour on 28 jewels, this custom-finished calibre features an Aquastar-signed rotor decorated with Geneva stripes. In 1962, Aquastar was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, by Mr Frédéric Robert. With his expertise as a diver, sailor, pilot, mathematician, and watchmaker, he took over his father's brand, JeanRichard®, and renamed it Aquastar to reflect his vision of producing professional-grade instruments for divers and aquatic activities. Aquastar received numerous patents within a decade of its establishment, thanks to the brilliant Marc Jasinski. Each patent served as a catalyst for the creation of a new member of the Aquastar family, such as the multiple dive decompression bezel in the Deepstar and the inner rotating bezel in the model 63. Additionally, the new crown sealing system and friction bezel ring were integrated into every Aquastar and Regatta counter watch. In 1974, Frédéric Robert retired from Aquastar, and the following year, the Eren Group of Geneva acquired the company. Under the new ownership, Aquastar adopted a fresh perspective and began manufacturing dive and sports watches for the mass market. These timepieces were made available through retail channels until 1982.
