The Watch

Released in 2019 Save the Ocean is a recreation of the cushion-cased 6000 series from the mid-’70s, a portion of the proceeds from the original sale went to Fabien Cousteau’s Ocean Learning Centre, a non-profit organisation dedicated to learning and marine conservation. The 45mm cushion case has a curvaceous shape, with a 48mm lug-to-lug length it fits comfortably on the wrist despite its case dimension, the sides of the case are highly polished whilst the top surface is brushed, and PVD coating is applied both to the bezel and the crown. The unidirectional dive bezel is pale blue for the first 20 minutes and dark blue for the rest with numerals in white, a nice contrast. Seiko Hardlex protects a blue dial that has a gradient from light to dark just like the ocean depths, a nice touch. Horizontal lines highlight this gradient and catch the light in an interesting way making it quite unique amongst Turtles. A day date sits at 3 o’clock, and disc and baton indexes are liberally coated in LumiBrite giving them dimension, broad arrow and syringe hands again are coated in LumiBrite, complete with a slim seconds hand that has a lollipop counterbalance. The screw-down case back is both polished and brushed with engraving, detailing that makes this stand out from the usual. It will be no surprise 200m water resistance is achieved. Inside beats a truly modern workhorse the Seiko automatic 4R36, 24 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour, both hacking and hand winding. Fitted on its original 22mm Seiko rubber strap with a signed buckle and the watch comes with its Seiko presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

I have been fortunate enough to have sold most Seiko Turtle models over the years, you name the reference, we've probably had it in the shop! This is one I've had a few times and every time I get it in I wonder whether it should stay with me that little longer, so good on the wrist and the dial is incredible, then we look at the price and it truly is a no-brainer! Snap it up whilst you can.

The Brand

Seikos' history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established by making wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956 Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph a monopusher. Not stopping there Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217 which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
