The Watch

Here we have a 2019 Zodiac Aerospace GMT Gulf Orange ZO9401 Limited to just 182 pieces, taking its design cues from their 1960s Aerospace GMT model introduced in 1962 which became a popular choice for soldiers during the Vietnam War. The 40mm brushed and polished stainless steel case has steeply angled lugs and a lug-to-lug length of 48mm and a case thickness of 13mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a signed crown with deep knurling for extra grip. The bidirectional steel bezel has the distinctive mineral crystal topped Gulf orange and pale blue 24-hour scale, this colour combination was originally inspired by a plane's Artificial Horizon instrument found in the centre of their instrument cluster, today it is known as the “Attitude Indicator”. It is also the colour of the famous Gulf Oil Company whose livery could be seen on many sports cars such as the Ford GT40 during the 60s and 70s and today on the Mclaren F1 car. A domed crystal sits above a black dial, an outer minute track has applied steel squares and baton indexes complete with a lume tip marking the hours, and at 3 o’clock a framed date window. Slender baton hands are infilled with lume, complemented by a rectangle counterweighted sweeping second hand and orange GMT hand. At 12 o’clock we have the Zodiac motif, “Aerospace GMT” printed in a flowing script and at 6 o’clock “Automatic” completes this dynamic vintage-inspired sports watch. On the reverse a screw-down case back with the Zodiac motif in the centre and the number out of 182, inside automatic ETA Cal. 2893-2, 21 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, turning the crown clockwise in position 1 will advance the GMT hand in hourly increments, turning anticlockwise will adjust the date, the movement has hand winding and hacking seconds for your convenience. The watch comes paired with its Zodiac 20mm polished and brushed stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding clasp and flip lock, all links are provided, and the watch comes with its Zodiac presentation box, swing tag and paperwork.

Personal Note

Zodiac as a brand is still overlooked and underrated, both from their vintage watches to their modern watches like this fantastic Aerospace GMT Gulf Orange limited edition! The colours used are striking and fun, whilst still providing a serious GMT, a difficult balance but one that Zodiac has mastered with this model. I wouldn't hesitate if you are looking for a great GMT that won't break the bank.

The Brand

Zodiac was founded in 1882 by Ariste Calame. Their headquarters can be found in Locle Switzerland. The name Zodiac was patented in 1908 when he started to manufacture wristwatches. In 1953 we saw the introduction of the Sea Wolf, one of the first commercial purpose-built dive watches. On October 1, 2001, Fossil Inc. purchased the worldwide rights to the Zodiac brand name for approximately $4.7 million.
