The Watch

Monaco was made famous by Steve McQueen in the film Le Mans in 1971 and since then, this has been an absolute icon and rightly so! Love or hate TAG; respect for Monaco is universal within the watch world! Here we have a TAG Heuer Monaco CW5140, this reference was in production between 2002/2003, with a 38.5mm square 18ct Yellow Gold case, stubby lugs with a lug-to-lug length of 46.5mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. Polished and fine brushed surfaces transition with crisp edges. On the right side, we have the two-stepped square chronograph pushers and in the centre a signed crown. The bevel-edged plexiglass crystal sits above the striking sunburst silver dial. An outer minute track with long applied baton indexes marks the hours, at 3 o'clock a continuous seconds, at 6 o’clock a 12-hour register and finally at 9 o’clock a 30-minute register, sword hands with luminescence infill complemented by a tapered chronograph hand. At 6 o’clock a date window perfectly balances this striking chronograph watch. At 12 o’clock we have “Monaco” and the TAG Heuer motif. On the reverse, a screwed-down case back with deep engraving and 18ct hallmarks. Inside a COSC Certified Automatic Cal. 17 movement, 37 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, has a base of the ETA 2894-2 movement with a chronograph module, decorated in Cotes de Geneve. The watch comes fitted on a TAG Heuer 22mm leather strap with an 18ct Yellow Gold buckle, the watch also comes with its TAG Heuer presentation box and receipt, the watch was sold in 2019 by a TAG Heuer Boutique as "New Old Stock".

Personal Note

If you are in the market for a solid gold TAG Heuer Monaco then look no further, especially as this is one of the only solid gold Monaco references ever made! When I was first made aware of this reference I thought it would be way too much, even seeing photos I wasn't sold on it, but having it in hand and on the wrist, it is truly incredible, yes it is a lot of gold and weighs a fair bit, but wow! If you are unsure, book an appointment and come see it for yourself!

The Brand

Edouard Heuer founded The Heuer Watch Company in 1860 in St. Imier, Switzerland. Chronographs have been the mainstay for Heuer and later TAG Heuer. Featuring many models and configurations, expanding the possibilities to the full. In 1958 Jack Heuer, Edouard’s son, joined the company. In 1962 the first generation of Autavia was launched. Famously worn in the 1970s by Formula One drivers such as Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, Emerson Fittipaldi, Clay Regazzoni and Mario Andretti, and many more. LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton S.A. offered a bid in 1999 that was accepted by TAG Heuer.
