The Watch
Oris was founded by Paul Cattin and George Christian in the Swiss town of Hölstein. They bought a factory and signed a contract with the mayor in 1904. Initially making pocket watches in 1925 they started to add bracelets to their pocket watches which soon transitioned into the wristwatch. By 1929, they had a total of six factories. At the end of the 1960s, Oris became one of the largest watch companies in the world, producing approximately 1.2 million timepieces a year. In 1982 Dr Rolf Portmann and Ulrich W. Herzog led a management buyout from Swatch Group. Unhappy with the way the Group was running things. Oris SA was born as an independent Swiss watch brand. 2002 saw their distinctive Red Rotor become an Oris registered Trademark.
Unveiled in 2015 at Baselworld the Oris Divers Sixty-Five, a heritage lineup capturing the essence of the original, with the use of modern materials and movements to bring it up to date. Unlike the original, the case size is a more contemporary 40mm. Oris introduced this Bi-colour model at Baselworld 2019.
This watch was made in collaboration with X Revolution who had discussed with the brand’s CEO Rolf Studer ideas of creating such a watch over drinks of Gin at the Oris small-batch distillery near Basel. The case is polished on its sides whilst the lug tops are brushed creating a seamless transition between the two. The bronze bezel is unidirectional with a lume pip at 12 o’clock and numerals in relief, the edges have enough ridge depth to make turning a breeze. It is clearly marked for 0-60 minutes. The screw-down signed crown is large enough for easy adjustment. A domed Sapphire crystal is AR coated allowing for excellent viewing angles under different lighting conditions. The glossy "Honey" dial reminds us of the tropical sun and the suntans achieved from prolonged exposure to UV resulting in its rich hues. Applied disc and baton indexes coated in light Old Radium SuperLuminova. Sword hands with a lollipop sweeping seconds hand are coated in light Old Radium SuperLuminova. The watch oozes the 60s appeal with a modern twist. On the reverse, a polished screw-down case back with an engraved “Oris X Revolution Limited Edition” in the center. Inside an Automatic Oris Cal. 733, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour based on the Sellita SW200-1. A robust and reliable movement. The watch comes fitted on a 20mm Oris two-tone Steel and Bronze center link bracelet with a signed push-button release folding clasp. Inside the box, we have an additional strap. The watch comes with its Oris presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
The dial tone of this watch is fantastic and paired against the bronze it really does pop on and off the wrist, it's the kind of watch you will either love or you'll hate, and that's ok! I think watch offers a lot of value for money and is a lot of fun, all from a brand that is really showing the industry how a modern watch brand should be run and operate in today's new world of social media and influence...
