The Watch

Here we have a rare 2019 Kurono Tokyo First Series Midnight Blue limited to 50 released in only a 10-minute window for ordering and immediately sold out, released as a first batch of 150 watches in 2019, 50 Mystic Grey, 50 Midnight Blue and 50 Eggshell White. Chrono Tokyo branding is the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) release. The 37mm high-polished stainless steel case curves over your wrist with a lug-to-lug length of 43.5mm and a case thickness of 10.5mm ensuring a comfortable fit. Taking its design cues from the Art Deco timepieces of the past. On the right side is a domed crown, the polished smooth bezel holds a domed sapphire crystal giving the illusion of the plexiglass crystals of the past, a beautiful shade of metallic Midnight Blue with its radial sunburst. Under different lighting conditions, the dial shimmers in the light as you rotate your wrist. An outer minute track is precisely printed, three engraved concentric steel rings with four applied baton indexes catch the light in a mesmerising way. Sculpted brushed Kurono Tokyo hands complemented by a tapered teardrop balanced sweeping second hand finishing this elegantly understated vision of Japanese creativity and sensibility. The Chrono Tokyo brand motif is found at 12 o’clock with “Automatic” at 6 o’clock. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the brand motif and details of the designer engraved into it, inside an automatic Miyota 90S5, 24 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, this movement is part of the high-grade Miyota family with hand winding and hacking for your convenience. The watch comes paired with three aftermarket straps including a mesh style and two leather straps and also comes with its Chrono Tokyo presentation box and papers.

Personal Note

Having recently sold a First Series "Mystic Grey" I feel incredibly lucky to now have the "Midnight Blue" in stock! These First Series were made in 2019 and limited to 50 in each colour, the dials are this series are still some of my favourites from Kurono Tokyo to this day and if you haven't had the chance to see one of these in person I suggest you book an appointment and come see it in the metal for yourself.

The Brand

Kurono Tokyo was founded by Hajime Asaoka in 2019. He is a Japanese watchmaker, one of only two members of AHCI (AHCI — Académie horlogère des créateurs indépendants). Academy of independent watch artists, since 2015. Renowned for very low production handcrafted watches that sell for upwards of £120,000. He decided to offer a more affordable timepiece that has the same DNA as his more bespoke watches. Each watch is offered in limited numbers and in the case of this watch was offered for only 10 minutes and was immediately sold out. Production is controlled through Precision Watch Tokyo Co.Ltd, the very same company that Hajime Asaoka uses for his handmade creations.
