The Watch
Here we have a 2019 Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Chronograph Q1538530 which is now discontinued after a short production, making this watch one of the last produced with this sector dial configuration, based on their pocket watch designs it celebrated the 25th anniversary of their Master Control collection. The 40mm polished and brushed stainless steel case gently curves over your wrist with finely tapered lugs and a lug-to-lug length of 48mm and a case thickness of 12mm ensuring a comfortable fit. Down the right side, we have the rectangular chronograph pushers and in the centre a signed crown. A smooth polished bezel holds a domed sapphire crystal above a majestic two-toned silver sector dial, designed to highlight the hours, minutes and seconds. An outer Tachymeter in blue surrounds a brushed silver sector ring with the minutes precisely executed around its edge and Arabic 12, 6 with baton indexes in-between marking the hours, at 3 o’clock a 30-minute register with blue numerals and at 9 o’clock a 12-hour register with blue numerals each with concentric circular patterns and intersecting the dial which creates a perfectly balanced bi-compax chronograph. Skeletonised blued syringe hands perfectly hit their mark on the minute and hours complemented by a blued tapered chronograph hand. At 12 o’clock we have the JLC motif and at 6 o’clock “Automatique” completes this vintage-inspired sector dial bi-compax chronograph. On the reverse, a screwed-down stainless steel case back with a large JL medallion in the centre, inside an automatic JLC Cal. 751G, 37 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, this in-house double-barrel column-wheel chronograph movement is their first Automatic chronograph released and consists of 235 parts. The watch is paired with its original 21mm blue Alligator leather strap with a signed JLC buckle and the watch comes with its JLC presentation box and paperwork.
Personal Note
This is a reference that very rarely comes up for sale and there is always a lot of demand, so if you are in the market I wouldn't hesitate on this fantastic example at an amazing price. JLC and amazing Sector dial designs go way back into their history, this model is no exception and takes many of the vintage design queues and brings them to modern standards and at a modern size, this truly looks fantastic on and off the wrist.
The Brand
Antoine LeCoultre founded LeCoultre in 1833 in the small village of Le Sentier, Switzerland. By 1866, LeCoultre’s workshop had grown from home-run manufacturers spread across Switzerland to installing modern steam-driven machines to power the tools of all of the watchmakers moving them from their homes and bringing them together, in one central unit. Now named LeCoultre & Cie, the company became the very first manufacturer in the Vallée de Joux Switzerland. Antoine and his son Elie LeCoultre employed more than 500 watchmakers in-house. In 1903 Edmond Jaeger, a watchmaker in Paris making watches for the French Navy, challenged the Swiss manufacturers to produce an ultrathin movement. Jacques-David LeCoultre, Elie’s son, rose to the challenge and created the world’s thinnest pocket watch, equipped with the LeCoultre 146 calibre, measuring just 1.38 mm thick. Over the following years, Jaeger and LeCoultre kept in touch, building a strong friendship and in 1937 Jaeger-LeCoultre was founded. In 2013 they celebrated their 180th Anniversary. Creating iconic timepieces like the Reverso wristwatch to the brilliantly engineered Atmos clock. During the war years, the Mark VII pilot watches of the 1940s were so accurate the Royal Air Force used them as aerial navigation instruments; later they created the first automatic watch to house a power-reserve indicator in 1948 that was used by the US Army Air Corps. Jaeger-LeCoultre has developed and revolutionised the watch industry like no other manufacturer. Since 2000 they have been a fully owned subsidiary of the Swiss luxury group Richemont. This group includes Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, IWC Schaffhausen, Panerai, Piaget, Vacheron Constantin, Montblanc, Dunhill and Chloé.
