A 2019 Chrono Tokyo Second Series “Eggshell” Reference CT002V, an exceptionally rare early creation from renowned independent watchmaker Hajime Asaoka and a fascinating precursor to what would become Kurono Tokyo. Produced exclusively for the Japanese market in just 50 pieces, its beautifully proportioned 37mm case frames an elegant cream sector dial inspired by classic mid-century and Art Deco design. The wonderfully restrained, no-date layout allows Asaoka’s eye for proportion and detail to take centre stage, while the high-beat Miyota 90S5 automatic movement provides dependable modern performance beneath the vintage aesthetic. Complete with its original leather strap, presentation box and paperwork, this is a particularly collectable piece from the formative years of one of Japan’s most celebrated contemporary independent watch brands.

Description

Here we have a 2019 Chrono Tokyo Second Series 'Eggshell' 37mm (Ref. CT002V), an exquisitely elegant and highly coveted independent Japanese dress watch that masterfully channels mid-century classical watchmaking. Designed by the legendary self-taught master watchmaker Hajime Asaoka as a highly exclusive, Japan-only precursor to his international Kurono Tokyo brand, this rare collectable comes from a strictly limited production run of 50 pieces worldwide. The beautifully proportioned 37mm 316L stainless steel case introduces a sleek, vintage-inspired architecture finished in a flawless, mirror-polished lustre. With an ultra-compact lug-to-lug length of 43.5mm and a svelte case thickness of just 10.5mm, its slender profile and flowing, organic geometry deliver an incredibly balanced, ergonomic, sophisticated wrist presence that sits like a second skin. The minimalist case silhouette features a polished push-pull crown, providing a traditional everyday splash-resistance rating. A high-domed sapphire crystal sits flush over a stunning, multi-layered Art Deco-inspired "Eggshell" cream dial. The layout provides a vibrant, high-contrast aesthetic, utilising concentric sector rings, crisp printed black indices, and a classic outer minute track. Ditching a traditional date window to favour pure, uncompromised symmetry, the dial cleanly lays out the time while showcasing Asaoka's meticulous eye for detail, highlighted by a polished set of high-contrast hands that track elegantly across the canvas. On the reverse, a solid screw-down case back protects the premium Japanese engine beating inside: the ultra-reliable, high-beat Automatic Miyota Cal. 90S5 movement. A true premium workhorse operating at a smooth frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz), this specialised, factory-made no-date calibre features manual winding, hacking seconds, and an ultra-slim profile that helps the watch maintain its svelte dimensions. This highly exclusive reference comes with its original premium 20mm leather strap and a polished stainless steel buckle. The watch comes complete with its presentation box and official paperwork.

Personal Note

This is a real gem from the legendary Hajime Asaoka and an incredibly exciting piece from the very early days of what would ultimately become Kurono Tokyo. As the Second Series, and with only 50 pieces produced, these early Chrono Tokyo watches are genuinely difficult to find. I love the simplicity of the Eggshell dial, the beautiful 37mm proportions and that unmistakable Asaoka design language. For me, it’s the history that makes this one particularly special, a rare opportunity to own one of the earliest chapters in the story of one of Japan’s most celebrated modern watchmakers. I would not hesitate to add this watch to your collection today!

About Kurono Tokyo

Chrono Tokyo was the original, Japan-exclusive precursor to Kurono Tokyo, an independent watch brand founded in 2018 by highly acclaimed, self-taught Japanese master watchmaker Hajime Asaoka. Asaoka, a rare non-European member of the prestigious Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI), established the brand to make his ultra-high-end, Art Deco-inspired designs accessible to regular collectors who could not afford or acquire his rare, six-figure handmade timepieces from his atelier. The first Chrono Tokyo models were released in April 2018 and were sold exclusively through the Japanese watch retailer TiCTAC. Due to intense demand and challenges faced by international collectors trying to purchase the JDM-exclusive line, Asaoka officially retired the Chrono Tokyo brand in 2021.
