The Watch
Here we have a 2018 Zenith Captain Elite Dual Time 03.2130.682/02.C498 first introduced by Zenith in 1952 as part of their Captain collection inspired by the world's sea captains who required an accurate timepiece, as they travelled the world’s oceans. A polished and brushed 40mm stainless steel case curves over your wrist with finely tapered lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 47.5mm and a case thickness of just 9mm ensures a comfortable fit. On the right side a signed crown and on the left side at 10 o’clock a pusher to activate the GMT hand. The polished smooth bezel holds a flat sapphire crystal above a stunning silver-toned dial. A 24-hour outer ring surrounds a wide concentric circular silver ring with applied steel baton indexes that slope with scalloped centres marks the hours, the engine turned guilloché centre disc has a continuous seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock with a blued hand, and the hands consist of elegant slender dagger-shaped hands and a blued GMT arrow hand, as you rotate your wrist the dial magically plays with the light, at 6 o’clock we have a framed date window, at 12 o’clock the Zenith motif and at 6 o’clock “Dual Time” complete this precise travellers companion. On the reverse a polished screwed-down exhibition case back, inside an automatic Zenith Cal. 682, 26 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, the movement has a bidirectional modified rotor and hacking seconds for your convenience. This family of Zenith Elite movements were in production from 1996 until 2014. The watch comes fitted on a Zenith 20mm leather strap with a signed buckle and the watch comes with its Zenith presentation box and paperwork.
Personal Note
If you know me you'll know I have a lot of love and respect for Zenith, the "Elite" family falls into that respect massively as I believe they offer a huge amount of value and are often overlooked by most collectors. This model provides a very smart GMT watch that can work with a black strap and become super dressy, or paired on a brown strap it becomes very casual, this is the perfect companion to any businessman or woman who travels, or for the collector who just wants a great GMT and something a bit different!
The Brand
Zenith was founded in 1865 by 22-year-old watchmaker Georges Favre-Jacot. Their manufacturing was based in Le Locle Switzerland. Famous Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911 and the North Pole in 1926, wore Zenith watches on his expeditions. In 1999 Zenith was purchased by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) joining brands like TAG and Hublot. Zenith is one of the only Swiss manufacturers to still produce their own in-house movements. Their most recognised movement is the El Primero; it was released in 1969, went into production in 1975 and was re-issued in 1986.
