Here we have a rare 2018 Vertex M100B Black Limited Edition of 150, 40mm, limited to just 150 pieces. This version features a stealthy black DLC (Diamond-like Carbon) coating that adds a durable layer to its tactical aesthetic. This highly exclusive piece serves as a fitting tribute to the watch originally made for the British military, the legendary Vertex WWW Cal. 59 timepiece of 1944. They were part of the 12 brands- Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record, Timor, and Vertex commissioned by the military during WWII. The curvaceous 40mm case curves over your wrist with tapered lugs, and the crisp edges lead to a lug-to-lug length of 49mm and a remarkably slim case thickness of 10mm, giving the watch a commanding yet incredibly sleek wrist presence. On the right side is a knurled push-pull crown. A brushed smooth bezel holds a double-domed box sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating above a matte black dial with the applied moulded X1 Super-LumiNova Arabic numerals adding height, real interest, and dimension. Elegant syringe hands are lume-filled, and at 6 o’clock we have a beautifully recessed sub-seconds register. At 12 o’clock, in keeping with its strict military heritage, there sits the Broad Arrow (pheon), the mark traditionally indicating British Government Issue property. On the reverse, a screw-down case back is engraved with its limited edition number out of 150. Inside beats a quality manually wound ETA 7001 movement, heavily modified by Vertex to echo the spirit of the original Cal59, featuring custom finishes and providing a traditional mechanical winding experience. Vertex was the brainchild of Claude Lyons of London, born in 1885. At the age of 17, he started his involvement in the watch Industry. With the help of a £1000 loan, he set up Dreadnaught Watches in 1912. In 1915, they were producing watches for the British armed forces during WWI. In 1916, he founded Vertex Watches Ltd in both Hatton Gardens and Switzerland. In 1927, Vertex became the exclusive importer of Movado Watches to the UK. 1938, Henry Lyons Claude's son-in-law joins the company. In 1940, their Hatton Gardens premises were destroyed by a Luftwaffe bomb. In 1941, as a Captain in the British Army, Henry was asked to create a watch suitable for the British military. 1944 saw the production of the Cal.59 W.W.W. Nav watch. Business continued successfully throughout the 50s and 60s. Sadly, in 1972, due to the emergence of the Quartz revolution and the expiration of his lease in Hatton Gardens, Henry closed the Company. In 2015, Claude’s Great Grandson Don Cochrane re-established the Company.
