More Information

Description

Introduced at Baselworld 2018, it has gained much fanfare, featuring all the attributes of their dive watches with the addition of a GMT function, making it a perfect companion for the travelling explorer. Here we have a 2019 Tudor Black Bay GMT 41mm on Bracelet 79830RB with a 41mm stainless steel case that is polished and satin-finished; its curvaceous flanks have a polished chamfered edge leading to a lug-to-lug length of 51mm and a case thickness of 15mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. A bidirectional Pepsi bezel with a 24-hour scale. A large screw-down crown makes adjustment a breeze. The domed sapphire crystal protects a matt black dial with an outer minute track. Applied disc and baton indexes are filled with lume; at 12 o’clock, we have the characteristic inverted triangle. Snowflake hands are complemented with a GMT hand with a red stem and white head for excellent visibility. The Tudor motif is at 12 o’clock, and the “GMT Chronometer Officially Certified” at 6 o’clock completes this versatile traveller companion. Inside, we have the in-house automatic Tudor MT5652, 28 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. It incorporates the GMT jumping-hour functionality and allows adjustments in 1-hour increments in both directions for the local hour hand. It comes paired with its original 22mm Tudor leather strap with a signed deployant clasp, and an additional Tudor 22mm leather strap. The watch comes with its original Tudor Box and Paperwork.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold with its original Tudor Box and Paperwork. It comes paired with its original 20mm Tudor stainless steel Oyster simulated-rivet-style bracelet, which uses screws to remove links; a signed safety clasp; all links are included; and an additional Tudor 22mm leather strap. The watch is from October 2018 and is sold in a worn-and-enjoyed, unpolished condition, which can be polished on request, as you can see. The watch comes with our 12-Months Warranty.

Personal Note

The Black Bay GMT has long been one of my recommendations for anyone looking for a serious travel watch, which still offers great value for money from one of the major Swiss brands. For not much more than £2,000, you're getting an in-house GMT movement with true traveller functionality, a robust and proven case design and one of the most recognisable bezel combinations in modern watchmaking. That's an incredibly compelling package when you consider what comparable GMTs from many other Swiss brands now cost. What I particularly like about this example is that it comes with both the Tudor bracelet and the Tudor leather strap, giving the next owner plenty of versatility straight out of the box. I would not hesitate to add this watch to your collection today!

About Tudor

The Tudor trademark was first registered in 1926 by the Swiss watchmaking company “Veuve de Philippe Hüther” on behalf of Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex watches. Wilsdorf took it over himself in 1936. Just after the Second World War, Hans Wilsdorf, Founder of Rolex, knew that the time had come to expand and give the Tudor brand a proper identity of its own. The Tudor Rose started to appear on their dials from this time. Thus, on 6 March 1946, he created the “Montres TUDOR S.A.” company, specialising in models for both men and women. Rolex guaranteed the technical, aesthetic and functional characteristics, along with the distribution and after-sales service. In 1948, we saw the first Tudor-specific advertisement. A few years later, they introduced the TUDOR Oyster Prince in 1952. Hans Wilsdorf allowed Tudor to use their waterproof Oyster case and the original self-winding Perpetual ’rotor’ movement. This was an exclusive arrangement that benefited both brands. Development soon commenced with the introduction of the TUDOR Oyster Prince Submariner, reference 7922, in 1954. This watch was quickly adopted by the French Navy in 1956. Building on its reputation of robustness in 1961, the Rose was replaced by the shield. Later in 1969, we saw the design changes in Ref. 7016, where for the first time, square indexes and angular hands nicknamed “Snowflake” allowed for a greater amount of lume to be applied, and the divers of the French Navy appreciated this. Today, these innovations can be seen in the Black Bay and Pelagos collections. In 1971, Tudor introduced the Oysterdate chronographs, nicknamed “Monte-Carlo” because they resemble a roulette wheel. Celebrating their 50th anniversary in 1996. In that same year, Tudor decided to shed Rolex-signed components such as the cases, crowns and bracelets in favour of Tudor-branded ones. Today, Tudor uses the in-house movements that were developed initially in 2015 in collaboration with Breitling.
