Here we have a 2018 Squale Matic 60 Blu Puro Gnomon Special Edition, reference BLU PURO. Released as a limited edition of just 160 pieces, it was produced as an exclusive collaboration with Gnomon Watches, a highly regarded, Singapore-based online retailer and boutique specialising in Swiss, German, and Japanese timepieces. Founded in 2002 by watch enthusiast Anders Tan, they are widely known in the horology community as a trusted source for "value-for-money" watches, including hard-to-find Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) models. This striking timepiece features a 44mm 316L stainless steel case with a high-polished finish. The case architecture features an iconic 4 o'clock recessed crown position and a structural, bidirectional 60-click enamel bezel with applied faceted markers, offering a commanding lug-to-lug length of 51mm and a bold thickness of 13.5mm for a powerful, ergonomic presence on the wrist. A signed screw-down crown. The standout feature of this model is its multi-level satin-polished dial, dressed in a vibrant sunburst Blu Puro hue that magically reflects the light as you rotate your wrist. The architectural layout features luminescent indices marking the hours, a discrete date window at 3 o'clock. Big orange-accented minute hand filled with premium Swiss Super-LumiNova for sharp legibility in dark environments. Protecting this complex design is a domed sapphire crystal with multiple layers of interior anti-reflective coating. On the reverse, a solid screw-down caseback featuring the classic Squale crest. Inside beats the Swiss-made automatic Calibre Sellita SW200-1. This customised 26-jewel mechanical calibre operates at a high-beat frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and features hacking seconds. The watch comes paired with a straight-ended 22mm Squale mesh stainless steel bracelet secured with a deployant clasp plus a 22mm Squale leather strap that tapers into a branded buckle.

The first thing that grabs your attention with this watch is that incredible Blu Puro dial. The way it catches the light and shifts through different shades of blue is genuinely captivating and gives the watch a lot more presence than photos can convey. Squale was founded by Charles von Büren in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 1946 as a manufacturer of watch cases and other components for other watch brands. In 1950, von Buren began to produce professional dive watches under the Squale name. During the 1960s and 70s, Squale produced cases for many brands, including Prima, Blandford, Deman Watch, Berio and Sinn. In 1974, Squale decided to enter the watch market in its own right. Unfortunately, like many other watch brands during the “quartz crisis”, they stopped production in 1989. Relaunching the brand in 2010, the Maggi family, who were previously distributors of von Buren and Squale watches in Italy. Their headquarters can be found in Milan, with watch production in Grenchen in the Jura valley, Switzerland.
