Description

Here is a rare, beautifully sculpted 2018 Rolex Cellini Prince Open-Back 5442/5. Released at BaselWorld 2005, this is a contemporary interpretation of their famous ‘Doctors watch’ released in 1928, so called due to the hour and minute hands never overlapping the running seconds, making it easy to read when taking a patient's pulse. To check your heart rate, you can feel for a pulse on your wrist or neck. Count the number of heartbeats in 15 seconds. Multiply that number by four to determine the total number of heartbeats in one minute. With a 26mm 18ct Rose Gold rectangular case that gently curves over your wrist, thanks to the flat-ended lugs. The curved stepped flanks lead to a comfortable 44mm lug-to-lug length and a case thickness of 11mm. On the right side, there is a signed coin-edged crown. A curved sapphire crystal sits above an incredible "Rayon Flammé de la Gloire" guilloché sunray-patterned black dial. Fluted 18ct Rose Gold rehaut adds interest and depth to this mesmerising dial. The small 18ct Rose Gold dial has back numerals and batons marking the hours, and 18ct Rose Gold hands sit majestically in its centre above a running seconds subdial with an 18ct Rose Gold arrow sweeping second hand, perfectly interconnected for a balanced, sophisticated dial. At noon, we have the  Rolex motif and ‘Prince’ printed in white. On the reverse, a sapphire exhibition case back engraved with Rolex Cellini, Swiss hallmarked along the bottom edge, inside a manually wound Rolex Cal. 7040, 21 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, decorated in "Rayon Flammé de la Gloire" guilloché. It comes paired with its 18mm Rolex leather strap secured by a signed 18ct Rose Gold folding butterfly clasp. This watch is sold with its original Rolex box, swing tags and paperwork.

Personal Note

It has been a while since I've seen one of these incredible Rolex Cellini, and for those who have never seen them before, it always comes as a shock that Rolex were producing these not that long ago. This reference 5442/5 in 18ct rose gold is a temporary interpretation of their famous ‘Doctors watch’ released in 1928, and I am waiting for them to do this again, as I feel it would do incredibly well in today's market. Powered by a wonderfully decorated manually would Rolex calibre 7040 and visible through an exhibition case back, this has to be one of the earliest models to feature such a thing from Rolex. I wouldn't hesitate to book an appointment and see this one in the gold for yourself whilst you still can!

About Rolex

In 1905, German-born Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis set up a company in London that imported Swiss movements, which were installed in British cases and sold to jewellers who put their names on the dials. Recognising the potential for their brand, Wilsdorf created the brand name Rolex in 1908. In 1910, a Rolex became the first wristwatch to carry the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, awarded by the Official Watch Rating Centre in Bienne, Switzerland. Demand for Rolex watches rose swiftly, and British taxes on the Swiss movements Rolex used prompted Wilsdorf to move the business to Geneva, Switzerland, in 1919. With production costs lowered, Wilsdorf quickly set out to solve the age-old problem of moisture and dust entering a watch case and damaging the movement. The Rolex watchmakers came up with a fully sealed watch case, which Wilsdorf named the Oyster, and released to an appreciative audience in 1926. In 1931, Rolex introduced the first automatic winding wristwatch, giving it the legendary name Oyster Perpetual. In 1945, they released the Datejust. The Datejust was the first watch to have the date jump instantaneously at midnight. The 1950s saw a whole lot of releases such as the Air-King (1958), the Explorer (1953), the Submariner (1953), the GMT Master (1955), the Day-Date (1956), the electromagnetic field resistant Milgauss (1956), the Lady-Datejust (1957) and the first Deep Sea model (1960). Wilsdorf’s death in 1960, saw ownership of Rolex S.A. (a collection of sub-companies) passed to the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation which was founded by Wilsdorf in 1945, the mission of which is simply to sustain Rolex S.A. indefinitely.
