The Watch

Formerly known as the La Generale Watch Co. it was founded by Louis Brandt in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1848. In 1903 they renamed the company Omega until 1982 when they officially changed their name to Omega SA. During WW1 Omega watches were used as official timekeepers for the Royal Flying Corps and the US Army. After stringent tests, NASA used Omega for all their Apollo missions including the 1969 Moon landing of Apollo 11. Today Omega is still an astronaut's first choice of timepiece. They are part of the Swiss Swatch Group. It was 1957, when OMEGA decided to release three professional timepieces the Seamaster 300, the Railmaster, and the Speedmaster. In 2017, Omega pays tribute to these three timepieces by releasing special 60th Anniversary editions of each model. The purpose of the Railmaster was to achieve accurate timekeeping while working near strong magnetic fields. The 1957 original had shielding that protected the movement up to 1000 gauss. This modern interpretation shields the movement up to 15,000 gausses. Researchers and electrical workers working with laboratory spectrometers and electrical transformers have been working closely with OMEGA to produce these timepieces.

Here we have a 2018 Omega Railmaster The 1957 Trilogy Limited Edition with a 38mm stainless steel case. Limited to 3,557 pieces. The case curves over your wrist with a lug to lug length of 48mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm for a comfortable fit. The lugs have a satisfying taper with polished and brushed surfaces that transition with crisp edges. On the right side is a signed NAIAD crown with deep knurling for extra grip, the small symbol indicates this special design as the pressure increases the self-seal tightens against the crown tube. A smooth stepped bezel holds a sapphire crystal AR coated on the inside. The black tropical dial has an outer minute track with dagger indexes coated in old-Radium SuperLumiNova giving the dial it's vintage aesthetic and charm. Arabic 12, 3, 6, and 9 are coated in SuperLumiNova. Broad arrow hands coated in old-Radium SuperLumiNova complete this striking dial. On the reverse, the Hippocampus is engraved onto the surface, indicating its Seamaster, Speedmaster family DNA.  “Railmaster” “60th Anniversary” is also deeply engraved. The double case back protects the movement from strong magnetic fields. Their soft-iron inner case protects the movement and acts as a Faraday cage. Inside an Automatic Omega Cal. 8806, 35 jewels, 25,200 beats per hour. Omega uses modern materials to achieve accuracy, and reliability, such as a silicon hairspring and a Free sprung balance wheel. Resistant to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gausses. The Rotor is Rhodium plated and is bidirectional for improved efficiency. Certified Master Chronometer, approved by METAS, ”Swiss National Metrology Institute”. The watch goes through COSC certification before being selected for the eight tests run by METAS. The watch comes fitted on its Omega 19mm reimagined flat link bracelet, with brushed links with polished sides. A push-button deployment clasp has a large Omega motif with fine brushing. The watch also comes with its Omega presentation box and papers.

Personal Note

I remember when this Trilogy was released and I found it to be perfect, each model was beautifully designed and proportioned correctly, with no fuss and no faff! The Speedmaster is easily my favourite, as I think it is for so many, but second is this Railmaster. It's simple but elegant and works so well on and off the wrist, the bracelet is incredibly well made and works well on the watch, but throw the watch on a nice leather strap and in my opinion you've got yourself a watch that can do anything and go anywhere! Just be warned, you may want to complete the set after picking this up.
