The Watch

Here we have a 2018 IWC Portofino Edition "150 Years" Blue IW356518 Limited to 2000 pieces, part of the 150th Jubilee collection celebrating their foundation in 1868. A curvaceous 40mm polished stainless steel case that curves over your wrist towards the elegantly curved lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 44.5mm and a case thickness of just 9mm ensure a comfortable fit. On the right side is a signed crown. A smooth polished bezel holds a convex sapphire crystal AR coated on both sides above a deep blue lacquered dial. An outer minute track is precisely executed with finely applied Arabic numerals, long batons, and 12 and 6 in Roman numerals mark the hours. At 3 o’clock a date window, and beautifully sculpted leaf hands are complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. At 12 o’clock we have the IWC motif and at 6 o’clock "Automatic" completes this sophisticated classic dress watch. On the reverse a screwed-down case back with 150 years in high relief in the centre and the watch details engraved around its edge, inside an automatic IWC Cal. 35111, 25 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour. The movement is based on a Sellita SW300-1 a, it was developed and constructed by Sellita to IWC specifications. The watch comes paired with a 20mm IWC Alligator leather strap and signed buckle and the watch comes with its IWC presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

If you are in the market for an attractive dress watch, from a recognisable and respected brand, all at an affordable and super competitive price, then look no further! This IWC "150 Years" Portofino ticks so many boxes, the deep blue dial is amazing and would easily pair with a nice brown strap to tone down the look and pair perfectly with something more casual... If you are unsure, book an appointment and come see it in the metal for yourself.

The Brand

Florentine Aristo Jones founded IWC in 1868, in 1867 he applied for a European passport with the ambition to create watches using the American system of Watchmaking. This system was derived from the Federal Armories at Springfield and Harpers Ferry, where high-precision interchangeable parts were needed for armaments, this was perfect to use in watchmaking and Florentine was a pioneer in introducing it to the Swiss. In 1868 Florentine and Charles Kidder ended up in  Schaffhausen Switzerland, originally called the company F. A Jones & Co which was later changed to IWC International Watch Company. Florentine returned to the USA in 1876 where he retired and sadly passed away in 1916, his spirit carries on today in the modern IWC watches.
