The Watch
Certina was founded in 1888 by Adolf and Alfred Kurth in Grenchen Switzerland. Where they made movements and supplies for the watch industry. Shortly afterwards they started making their own watches and grew their workforce from 3 to 250 in 1938 when they celebrated their 50th Anniversary. By 1955 they had 500 employees and were producing 1000 watches a day. This expansion continued in 1971 where they were producing 600,000 watches every year with a workforce of 900. In 1983 Certina became a member of the Swatch group which they continue to this day.
Our 2018 Certina DS PH200M Heritage is inspired by their watch of the 1960s, designed for the depths. A 43mm brushed 316L stainless steel case. Its lines transition towards tapering lugs that are flush with the case. On the right side, a screw-down signed crown. The unidirectional aluminium bezel has a black dive insert with clearly marked 60-minute numerals. A domed Hesalite crystal has a NEX Scratchguard treatment applied. Its black dial has an outer minute track with Super-LumiNova filled applied batons marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a small date window. Broad sword hand for the minutes alongside a broad arrow hand for the hours both have Super-LumiNova® infill. A red centre seconds hand adds a pop to the dial. Giving the watch a distinctive look and feel. On the reverse, a screw-down case back together with the screw-down crown gives the watch its DS (Double Security) ISO-6425 Certification. In the centre is the historic turtle emblem. Inside an Automatic Powermatic 80 Cal. 80.111, 23 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on its Certina 20mm NATO strap with a signed buckle and also comes with its Certina presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
Certina has nailed the design of this watch and continue to develop on it with recent additions, thankfully they had such a beautiful vintage watch to base this on in the first place! I am all for brands opening their archives and basing modern watches on their past, it opens up the doors to vintage styled watches in a modern way with modern reliability.
