The Watch

Here we have a 2017 Zenith El Primero New Vintage 1969 Black Limited to 250 pieces, inspired by the original iconic 1969 Zenith El Primero movement and celebrating their 40th Anniversary 1969-2009. The 39.5mm tonneau-shaped black PVD-coated Ti 2 Titanium case sits on the wrist like a cushion with flat-ended lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 49.5mm and a case thickness of 14mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. Down the right side, we have the piston-style chronograph pushers and a signed crown in the centre. A box-shaped sapphire crystal AR coated on both sides sits above a stunning transparent dynamic dial. An outer Tachymeter chapter ring surrounds a  black with white numerals 1/100th of a second scale above the minute track precisely executed, applied Rhodium baton indexes filled with lume mark the hours, between the 4 and 5 a date window, at 3 o’clock a 30-minute register, at 6 o’clock a 12-hour register and finally at 9 o’clock continuous seconds register, each float above the dial, adding dimension and interest, black baton hands filled with lume are complemented by a red chronograph hand matching the Tachymeter text, a nice touch. On the reverse, a screw-down sapphire exhibition case back with the Limited edition shield in the centre, inside automatic Zenith El Primero Cal. 469, 31 jewels, beating at 36,000 beats per hour, this iconic column wheel movement has 278 components and a black PVD-coated rotor stamped with Zenith El Primero. The watch comes paired with its original black Zenith 20mm leather strap and black PVD-coated Ti 2 Zenith buckle. This watch is sold with its original special Zenith presentation box, swing tag and anniversary plaque.

Personal Note

Models like this Zenith El Primero are reminders of why I love what I do for a living, I get to see something I never knew existed regularly! This limited edition of just 250 pieces features a black titanium case and an exhibition dial revealing the mechanics on the dial side! This really is something unique and special from Zenith and the value is undeniable, I wouldn't hesitate on this one if you are interested!

The Brand

Zenith was founded in 1865 by 22-year-old watchmaker Georges Favre-Jacot. Their manufacturing was based in Le Locle Switzerland. Famous Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911 and the North Pole in 1926, wore Zenith watches on his expeditions. In 1999 Zenith was purchased by LVMH  (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) joining brands like TAG and Hublot. Zenith is one of the only Swiss manufacturers to still produce their own in-house movements. Their most recognised movement is the El Primero; it was released in 1969, went into production in 1975 and was re-issued in 1986.
