The Watch

Formerly known as the La Generale Watch Co., Louis Brandt founded it in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1848. In 1903, they renamed their company Omega until 1982, when they officially changed their name to Omega SA. They are today part of the Swiss Swatch Group. The first Omega Seamasters were based loosely on waterproof watches made for the Royal Navy. What made the Seamaster appealing was using an O-Ring gasket which gave it temperature and depth resistance. In 1955, the Swiss Laboratory for Watch ‌ ‌Research‌ tested out 50 Seamaster cases with a 60-meter depth rating. Omega was so confident that they strapped one to the outside of a plane and flew it over the North pole in 1956. The Omega Speedmaster Professional was made famous by its 6 lunar missions. NASA in 1964 sent out letters to 10 watch brands, asking them to send in a Chronograph. Only four brands responded to NASA’s request, which were: Rolex, Longines-Wittnauer, Hamilton, and Omega, comically Hamilton sent in a pocket watch. Having all the specific requirements to achieve precise measurements, Omega continued to be tested with many manned flights.

Here we have a 2017 Omega Speedmaster Professional Hesalite now Discontinued. The 42mm stainless steel case has polished and brushed surfaces that lead to curved tapering lugs. The crisp lines transition effortlessly around the case. A lug to lug length of 48mm ensures a comfortable fit on the wrist. A fixed tachymeter sits on its black bezel. The dial is protected by Hesalite crystal, an outer minute track with slim baton indexes that mark the hours. 3 deeply recessed Sub-dials are 60 seconds, 30 minutes, and 12 hours. Sword hands and an elegant long central chronograph seconds hand that accurately hits the minute track. The dial has perfect symmetry. Hands and indexes are lumed with Super-Luminova. The screw-down case back is engraved with “Flight - Qualified By NASA for all Manned Space Missions” and “The First watch worn on the Moon” a fitting testament to man's achievements in space. Inside we have the Cal.1861, 18 Jewels hand-wound Chronograph beating at 21,600 bph and it has a Rhodium-plated finish. As a manual wound movement, it is the direct descendant of the original moon watch that used the Cal. 361 movement. Fitted on a 20mm Stainless Steel bracelet with a signed clasp fits the wrist comfortably, along with all the additions you would expect with a modern Speedmaster including original Box & Papers.

Personal Note

The Speedmaster Professional is going to always be a classic, a watch you really cannot go wrong with. So much history for such a fair price, not many brands can even claim close to what the Speedmaster can and still be offered at retail and available like this for a nice saving! Plus the hesalite is always a personal choice for me, love the Sapphire but there is something charming about the originality of the plastic crystal!
