The Watch

Here we have a 2017 Longines Lindbergh Hour Angle Automatic 628.524 celebrating the 90th anniversary of the first solo transatlantic flight made by Charles Lindbergh. In 1927 Charles Lindbergh flew solo from New York to Paris, it took him 33 and a half hours. After this intrepid flight, he came up with the idea of The Hour Angle system that uses a timepiece, the location of the sun, and maths calculations to provide the user’s longitudinal location on the earth's surface, very helpful for navigation. Part of the Longines Heritage Avigation collection, a play on words of Aviation and Navigation, this is a smaller version of their original 47mm Longines-Wittnauer, timepiece released in 1930-31. The 38mm polished stainless steel case curves over your wrist with finely tapered lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 42mm and a case thickness of 11.5mm ensure a comfortable fit. On the right side an onion-style crown and a pusher to open the case back, like you would find on a pocket watch. The bidirectional bezel has deep knurling for a better grip and the engraved calibrated 15-degree Angle time scale is precisely marked, a high domed sapphire crystal sits above a white lacquered and silver dial. An outer minute track surrounds Roman numeral indices marking the hours above the calibrated 180 degrees in blue, the rotating silver disc is rotated using the crown to synchronise the Radio time signal, an inner minute track surrounds a red 15 degrees scale, elegant blued steel Breguet hands are complemented by a tapered second hand, at 12 o’clock we have the Longines motif completing this interesting Aeronautic tool watch. On the reverse, a snap on the case back opened with a pusher on the side of the case, engraved with the details of the watch on the inside and the engraved Longines motif in the centre on the outside, inside an automatic Longines Cal. L628.1, 21 jewels. The watch comes paired with a 20mm leather strap and a signed pin buckle, and this watch is sold with its original Longines box, travel pouch and paperwork.

Personal Note

Arguably the best Longines Lindbergh Hour re-edition they have done in 38mm with the hunter-style case back, it is incredible on the wrist and really looks like a vintage watch with all the charm! I often say brand re-editions miss the mark by one or two points, usually an oddly placed date or a huge case size... In this example there is personally nothing I would change, they hit all the right marks and it is perfect, even more so for the price!

The Brand

Longines was founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz and is considered to be the oldest registered watch brand. The Longines factory was opened in 1867 in Saint-Imier Switzerland. From this date, the name Longines was present on their dials and the winged hourglass was engraved onto their movements. After visiting the Universal Exhibition of 1876 in the United States, Longines became pioneers in mechanised production. In 1880 the brand name was filed with the Federal Office of Intellectual Property; later their logo was registered in 1889. Their first wristwatch with a single pusher the calibre 13.33z was introduced in 1913. They became the official supplier of the International Aeronautical Federation in 1919. Lindbergh, the aviator and adventurer, worked with Longines to create the Hour Angle watch in 1927. Their first self-winding calibre 22A was produced in 1945. With continued innovation and technical achievements, Longines became the official timekeeper for Formula One in 1983 for 10 years. They also in 2009 became the official timekeeper for the French Open at Roland Garros. Purchased in 1971 by ‘Ebauches SA’, Swiss watchmakers SSIH who owned Omega, Tissot and Lemania and ASUAG who owned Certina, Endura, Eterna, Hamilton, Longines, Mido and Rado. were merged in 1983 to become the Swatch Group in 1998.
