The Watch

Longines was founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz and is considered to be the oldest registered watch brand. The Longines factory was opened in 1867 in Saint-Imier Switzerland. From this date, the name Longines was present on their dials and the winged hourglass was engraved onto their movements. After visiting the Universal Exhibition of 1876 in the United States, Longines became pioneers in mechanised production. In 1880 the brand name was filed with the Federal Office of Intellectual Property; later their logo was registered in 1889. Their first wristwatch with a single pusher the calibre 13.33z was introduced in 1913. They became the official supplier for the International Aeronautical Federation in 1919. Lindbergh, the aviator and adventurer, worked with Longines to create the Hour Angle watch in 1927. Their first self-winding calibre 22A was produced in 1945. With continued innovation and technical achievements, Longines became the official timekeeper for Formula one in 1983 for 10 years. They also in 2009 became the official timekeeper for the French Open at Roland Garros. Purchased in 1971 by ‘Ebauches SA’, Swiss watchmakers SSIH who owned Omega, Tissot and Lemania and ASUAG who owned Certina, Endura, Eterna, Hamilton, Longines, Mido and Rado. were merged in 1983 to become the Swatch Group in 1998.

Here we have a 2017 Longines HydroConquest L36424 with a 41mm satin-brushed stainless steel case. Thick curved lugs hug the wrist for a comfortable fit. A lug to lug length of 50mm and a case thickness of 11.5mm gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a signed screw-down crown protected by large crown guards. The unidirectional dive bezel has an outer edge of deep knurling and a sunburst deep blue aluminium insert with a silver obelisk and numeral markings. A flat sapphire crystal AR coated sits above a deep blue dial. An outer minute track with applied disc indexes and large 12, 6 and 9 numerals and batons coated in Super LumiNova luminance marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window. Large sword hands infilled with luminance complimented with a red arrow tipped second hand. Text is precisely applied to the dial with the Longines motif at 12 o’clock. On the reverse, a screw-down case back has the embossed Longines motif in the centre and the details of the watch engraved around its outer edge. Inside an Automatic Longines Cal. L888, 21 jewels, 25,200 beats per hour, based on the ETA 2892-A2. The watch comes fitted on its 21mm polished and brushed stainless steel bracelet with a double folding clasp and dive extension and also comes with its Longines presentation box and papers.

Personal Note

I've been a big advocate for the Conquest line by Longines and when I worked retail it was often my go-to watch for anyone who wanted an affordable but well-made dive watch from a major brand. This watch is perfect for the seasoned collector will as many brands as you can possibly name, this watch will tick all the boxes and be a great run around and "do anything with" kind of watch. And for the new collector, it will stand as a gateway into more watches and continue the passion, I have no doubt of that.
