The Watch

Here we have a 2016 Oak & Oscar Sandford GMT PVD Automatic limited to 100 pieces, named after Sandford Fleming a Scottish inventor and engineer who migrated to Canada in the mid-1800s, he played a vital role in developing a significant portion of the Canadian railway and was also recognized as one of the earliest and most influential advocates of the implementation of standardised time zones. The 40mm brushed Gunmetal PVD coated stainless steel case curves over your wrist with flat-ended tapered lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 46mm and a case thickness of 11.5mm ensure a comfortable fit. Down the right side, we have the signed screw-down crown to adjust the internal rotating 24-hour bezel and the signed screw-down crown to adjust the time, GMT hand and date. A double-domed sapphire crystal AR coated sits above a striking charcoal grey sandwich dial with a Super-LumiNova BGW9 lower layer, an outer minute track surrounding cut-out Arabic numerals marking the hours, at 6 o’clock a date window, tapered PVD coated hands filled with Super-LumiNova BGW9 are complemented by an orange-tipped Stone age shaped arrowhead GMT hand and an orange sweeping second hand with a counterbalance that aligns with the Oak & Oscar motif at 12 o’clock that Fancher calls the "Stonehenge effect". At 6 o’clock “Sandford Automatic GMT” completes this dynamic traveller companion. On the reverse, a screw-down stainless steel exhibition case back with the details engraved around the edge and the number out of 066/100, inside an automatic Soprod Cal. C125, 25 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, this movement is based on the Soprod A10-2/M100 and has hacking seconds, an independent GMT hand and a modified rotor. The watch comes paired with its 20mm Oak & Oscar vintage style tan-coloured Horween leather strap with a signed PVD-coated pin buckle.

Personal Note

I have been fortunate to have stocked and sold a few Oak & Oscar watches and they never disappoint! This Sandford GMT limited to 100 pieces is amazing on and off the wrist, the choice of PVD for the case and a matching tone for the dial works incredibly well, especially with the pops of orange! If you are after a GMT but want something that little bit different, this is one to consider.

The Brand

In 2015, Chase Fancher founded Oak & Oscar after leaving the real estate industry to pursue a more fulfilling project. Based in Chicago, he has assembled a team of like-minded individuals who are passionate about crafting high-quality timepieces, each with its own unique story. It is uncommon for a young independent microbrand to have its own watchmaker, but Chase has hired Nathan Bobinchak, who holds a certification from the Swiss American Watchmakers Training Alliance at the Lititz Watch Technicum in Pennsylvania. Nathan has been a bench watchmaker and a watchmaking instructor for the Horological Society of New York, utilising his skills to their fullest potential.
