Here we have a 2016 Nomos Ahoi Atlantik Blue Automatic 552 with a polished 40mm stainless steel case that commands a modern presence on the wrist with elongated angular lugs, where a lug-to-lug length of 50.5mm and a thickness of 10.5mm ensure a sleek yet substantial fit. On the right side is a screw-down signed crown protected by robust crown guards, hinting at its aquatic capabilities. A polished bezel holds a flat sapphire crystal above a striking Bauhaus-influenced dial in a deep Atlantik blue that shifts beautifully from dark navy to charcoal grey. An outer minute track with dark grey accents is precisely executed, surrounding crisp Arabic numerals and baton indexes coated in creamy Super-LumiNova. At 6 o’clock, a sub-seconds register features a vibrant neon orange hand, creating a seamless symmetry and a playful pop of colour. A subtle colour-matching date window sits under the sub-seconds. Nomos was founded in 1990, just after the reunification of Germany had happened with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the USSR. Based in the Glashütte region, it takes inspiration from the Bauhaus design movement. To have Glashütte on the dial, Nomos has to meet very strict quality standards. They must create at least 50 % of the watch calibre in Glashütte to receive the title of being a true Glashütte watch. They only use in-house manufactured movements, built up to 95% in the region, surpassing that requirement.
