Description

Here we have a 2015 Omega Speedmaster Mark II "Rio 2016" Limited Edition of just 2016 pieces. Released as a highly significant milestone in the brand's Olympic heritage timeline, it was produced as a limited edition of just 2,016 pieces to celebrate Omega's role as the Official Timekeeper of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, updating the iconic 1969 Mark II pilot-style case with modern mechanical upgrades. This distinctive timepiece features a 42mm stainless steel case with a curvaceous, sinuous barrel profile that utilises precise sunburst brushing along the top face and hand-polished bevelled edges for dramatic mirror surfaces. The chamfered case architecture features an integrated, streamlined form without a traditional bezel, offering a highly compact lug-to-lug length of 46mm and a bold, powerful thickness of 15mm for a commanding presence on the wrist. A signed screw-down crown ensures a robust 100-metre water resistance rating. The standout feature of this model is its multi-level matte-black dial, inspired by the energy of the Olympic Games. The layout features a tri-compax chronograph configuration: three sub-dials placed at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, uniquely decorated with rings crafted from 18ct bronze, 925 sterling silver, and 18ct yellow gold to represent the coveted Olympic medals, alongside a discreet date window at 6 o'clock. A specialised tachymeter scale printed directly onto the sapphire crystal is illuminated from beneath by an innovative, aluminium-ring Super-LumiNova ring. Sharp, white baton hands and applied indices are filled with premium Swiss luminescence for excellent legibility in dark environments. Protecting this complex design is a flat scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with an interior anti-reflective coating. On the reverse, a solid screw-down caseback is beautifully decorated with an officially stamped Rio 2016 Olympic Games logo and custom limited-edition engravings. Inside beats the proprietary Swiss-made automatic Calibre Omega 3330. This customised high-performance movement features an officially certified chronometer (COSC) rating, a column-wheel chronograph mechanism, a Co-Axial escapement for long-term precision, and a non-magnetic Si14 silicon balance spring. The watch comes paired with an integrated 20mm bespoke brushed stainless steel three-link bracelet that tapers into a branded folding clasp equipped with a patented rack-and-pusher micro-adjustment extension.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold with its original Omega box and paperwork. The watch comes paired with a 20mm brushed stainless steel three-link bracelet that tapers to a branded folding clasp; it will fit up to a 7-inch wrist, NOT using the clasp extension. The watch is from April 2015 and is sold in worn condition, but overall it is in very fair condition, as you can see. The watch comes with our 12-Months Warranty.

Personal Note

At first glance, this looks like a very cool modern Mark II, but then you notice the chronograph sub-dials that each feature rings in bronze, silver, and gold to represent the Olympic medals. It’s such a subtle touch, but incredibly well executed and exactly the kind of detail that makes limited editions feel genuinely special rather than just another colour variation. Combined with the tonneau-shaped case and illuminated tachymeter scale, it ends up being one of the more interesting modern Speedmasters to spend time with in person. I would not hesitate to add this watch to your collection today!

About Omega

Formerly known as the La Generale Watch Co., founded in 1848 by Louis Brandt in La Chaux-de-Fonds. When he died in 1879, his sons carried on his dream. In 1880, they moved to 96 Rue Jakob-Stampfli, where they remain today. The brothers produced their first mass-produced calibre, the Labrador, in 1885. Just a few years later, in 1892, they produced the first minute-repeater. In 1903, they renamed the company Omega, which they kept until 1982, when they officially changed their name to Omega SA. During WW1, Omega watches were used as official timekeepers for the Royal Flying Corps and the US Army. In 1930, Omega and Tissot merged together to form Société Suisse pour l'Industrie Horlogère (SSIH). In 1931, another group was formed - Allgemeine Schweizerische Uhrenindustrie AG (ASUAG). Where SSIH was primarily French-speaking, ASUAG was founded by the more German-speaking members of the Swiss watch industry. In 1948, they introduced the first edition of one of its most symbolic watches: the Seamaster. Omega first introduced the Constellation in 1952. At the time, it was Omega's flagship timepiece. The first models had a Cal. 354 bumper movement in them. Later in 1955, Omega introduced the Automatic Cal. 50x, followed in 1959 by the Cal. 55x (no date) and 56x (date) versions. Many of the Constellations came with pie-pan dials, diamond indexes, and fancy lug configurations. All the gold Constellations of that time have the Observatory of Geneva hand-engraved on the back. The stainless steel and stainless steel/gold versions had a gold medallion on the back with the Observatory of Geneva. The eight stars above the Observatory stand for the many exploits of Omega in the world Chronometer competition. Celebrating the fact that all Constellations are Chronometer Certified. In 1962, when astronaut Wally Schirra wore a Speedmaster on his Mercury Sigma 7 Mission, making it the first Omega watch to enter space. After rigorous tests, NASA used Omega for all their Apollo missions, including the 1969 Moon landing of Apollo 11. Today, Omega is still an astronaut's first choice. In 1969, President Nixon famously said it was “too valuable” and turned down the first-ever all-gold Speedmaster Professional Deluxe. As a response to the ever-growing threat of electronic watches to the manufacturers of mechanical watches, Omega and many Swiss brands, such as Rolex and Patek Philippe, formed Centre Electronique Horloger (CEH). Prototypes began to appear in 1967, with their production starting in 1968. Then, in 1972, Omega introduced the reference 198.030, which included the Omega calibre 1250, a ‘tuning-fork electronic movement which was made under licence from Bulova. Later, we saw a merger of SSIH and ASUAG into SMH, or Société de Microélectronique et d’Horlogerie. This merger took place in 1983. In 1992, the company acquired Blancpain, and in 1998, they officially rebranded themselves from SMH to the Swatch Group. Then, in 1999, they purchased and integrated Breguet into the Swatch Group.
