The Watch
Here we have a classic 2014 Zenith Espada 36,000 VHP Black 03.2170.4650 with a curvaceous 40mm polished and brushed stainless steel case that comfortably sits on your wrist thanks to the tapered flat-ended lugs. Its chamfer-edged flanks lead to a lug-to-lug length of 47.5mm and a case thickness of 11.5mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a signed screw-down crown with deep knurling for grip. The smooth polished bezel holds a domed sapphire crystal above a dramatic black sunburst dial. An outer minute chapter ring surrounds applied bevelled edged baton indexes inside a bevel patterned ring marking the hours; at 3 o’clock a framed date window, an inner minute track is precisely executed, polished facet Rhodium hands are filled with SuperLumiNova and complemented by a Zenith star counterweighted tapered second hand tipped in pale blue, at 12 o’clock we have the Zenith motif “El Primero” and at 6 o’clock “Espada” “36000 VpH” in blue completes this striking timepiece. On the reverse, a screwed-down sapphire exhibition case back with the details of the watch engraved around its edge, inside an automatic Zenith Cal. 4650 B, 22 jewels, beating at 36,000 beats per hour, its skeletonised rotor has the Zenith star inside. It comes paired with its 20mm polished and brushed stainless steel bracelet secured by a signed concealed butterfly clasp, plus spare links and comes with its Zenith presentation box and paperwork.
Personal Note
It is shocking how undervalued and underappreciated the Zenith Espadas are in the market today. This is the wonderful deep black dial in 40mm featuring the automatic Zenith Cal. 4650B, a simplified and stripped-back El Primero but keeps the amazing high beat 36,000 sweep. Some terms are thrown around a little too often in my opinion and 'GADA' watch is one of them, the 'Go Anywhere, Do Anything' watch, but this Zenith Espada definitely ticks that box and could easily be your daily watch and not looking out of place in any situation. I would not hesitate to book an appointment to try this one for yourself!
The Brand
Zenith was founded in 1865 by 22-year-old watchmaker Georges Favre-Jacot. Their manufacturing was based in Le Locle, Switzerland. Famous Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911 and the North Pole in 1926, wore Zenith watches on his expeditions. In 1999, Zenith was purchased by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton), joining brands like TAG and Hublot. Zenith is one of the only Swiss manufacturers to still produce their own in-house movements. Their most recognised movement is the El Primero; it was released in 1969, went into production in 1975 and was re-issued in 1986.
