More Information

Description

Here we have an early 2014 Stowa Flieger Classic 40 Baumuster B Automatic featuring a perfectly balanced 40mm matte-blasted stainless steel case. The Flieger line is a masterclass in German military aviation history, closely mirroring the functional aesthetic and clean lines that Stowa first introduced back in 1940 as one of the original five manufacturers of the historic Beobachtungsuhr (B-Uhr). Developed in 1942 for the German Luftwaffe as an update to the simpler Type A dial, it was originally built in large 55mm sizes to wear over flight suits. An ultra-slim case thickness of just 10mm and an elongated lug-to-lug of 48.5mm ensure a remarkably sleek, flat profile that sits beautifully on the wrist. At 3 o’clock sits an oversized, historically accurate onion push-pull crown, allowing smooth manual winding and quick time setting, even while wearing gloves. A minimal bezel frames a domed sapphire crystal above a crisp, matte black Baumuster B dial.  At 12 o’clock, a distinct triangle marker helps you orient quickly in low light. The layout features a prominent outer track for minutes and seconds, while an inner track marks the hours. Sword hands sweep across the layout, fully coated in Super-LumiNova for exceptional legibility in low light. The reverse features a screw-down exhibition case back that showcases the mechanical heart within. Inside beats the reliable Swiss ETA Calibre 2824-2 automatic movement, featuring a centre rotor and hacking seconds for precise synchronisation. Stowa beautifully finishes the calibre with a custom-engraved rotor. The classic straight lugs step down to 20mm, effortlessly framing a 20mm leather vintage-style strap and pin buckle.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold with its original Stowa metal box and paperwork. The watch comes paired with a 20mm vintage-style leather strap and pin buckle. The watch is from October 2014 and is sold in worn condition, but overall it is in very fair condition, as you can see in the photos. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

Personal Note

There's no getting away from the fact that the history behind these Flieger watches is a difficult one, but I think it's an important part of watchmaking history to remember and understand nonetheless. And when it comes to the watch itself, Stowa really does a fantastic job. The design is wonderfully simple and purposeful, the proportions are absolutely spot on, and the fit and finish are seriously impressive. It's one of those watches that just feels right when you get it on the wrist. I'm also a big fan of these earlier examples with the trusty ETA 2824-2 movement inside. They're dependable, easily serviced and, for the money, I genuinely think they're ridiculously good value. A fantastic example of traditional German watchmaking, with a fascinating history and an awful lot to offer for the price. Snap it up today!

About Stowa

Stowa is a renowned German watchmaker known for its Bauhaus-style, pilot, and marine watches. The company was founded by Walter Storz in Hornberg, Germany, and the name "Stowa" is a combination of his last and first names (Storz Walter). In 1935, Stowa moved its headquarters to Pforzheim, a hub for watchmaking, to expand production. By 1939, it became one of only five original manufacturers selected to produce the legendary observation watches (Flieger/B-Uhr) for the German Luftwaffe. However, in 1945, the Pforzheim factory was destroyed in Allied bombing raids, forcing the company to relocate and rebuild in Rheinfelden, Germany. In 1996, independent watchmaker Jörg Schauer acquired Stowa, reviving the brand's historical archives and reissuing classic models. In 2021, Stowa joined Tempus Arte GmbH & Co. KG, aligning itself with prestigious luxury manufacturers such as Lang & Heyne.
