A 2014 Habring² Jumping Second Pilot A09MS, a fascinating example of independent Austrian watchmaking from the award-winning husband-and-wife team of Richard and Maria Habring. Its purposeful 42mm pilot's case and highly legible black dial conceal the real star: the mechanically driven jumping or "deadbeat" seconds complication, allowing the central seconds hand to advance precisely once per second despite being entirely mechanical. Powered by the beautifully engineered hand-wound A09MS calibre and carrying the early production number #02-2014, this is a wonderfully unusual piece of independent horology, complete with its Habring² presentation box and paperwork.

Description

Here we have a 2014 Habring² Jumping Second Pilot Black Manual A09MS 42mm, a masterfully executed timepiece from the award-winning Austrian independent watchmaker Habring². Featuring a robust and commanding 42mm stainless steel round case with long, slim drilled lugs. A lug-to-lug length of 52mm combined with curved, ergonomic flanks ensures a powerful yet balanced fit on your wrist. At 14mm thick, it commands an impressive presence, with high-quality brushed surface that perfectly reflect the brand's meticulous attention to detail. Its smooth, bezel securely holds a flat sapphire crystal. On the right side, a double-sealed crown manages the winding and time-setting with ease. The watch features the consecutive engraved serial number #02-2014 nicely tucked between the lugs, noting its early production run. The matte black pilot-style dial is a masterclass in legibility, showcasing a subtle granular texture that absorbs glare. Striking white Arabic numerals and a crisp outer minute track mark the hours, heavily influenced by historic military instrument design. Rather than sweeping smoothly, the centrally mounted hands and the central second hand tick precisely once per second. This is the signature "deadbeat" seconds complication, a rare haute horlogerie function that mirrors the motion of a quartz watch but is driven entirely by mechanical force. On the reverse, an exhibition case back reveals the beautifully finished, manually wound Habring2 Calibre A09MS movement. Running across 20 jewels at 28,800 beats per hour, this bespoke calibre utilises a robust gear train base that has been heavily modified in-house by Richard and Maria Habring with their proprietary jumping seconds module, the very mechanism that won them the prestigious "Petite Aiguille" prize at the GPHG. It features an antimagnetic escapement paired with a chronometer-grade Carl Haas hairspring and premium KIF shock protection. The watch comes paired with 3 generic 22mm straps and a Habring² buckle. It is sold with its Habring² presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

The deadbeat seconds complication is what makes this watch so special for me. Watching that seconds hand tick precisely once per second, knowing it's being achieved entirely mechanically, is wonderfully counterintuitive. At first glance, you could easily mistake it for quartz, but underneath is some seriously clever independent watchmaking. That's where Habring² offers such incredible value. Richard and Maria Habring produce genuinely interesting complications with real horological substance, yet their watches remain remarkably accessible compared with much of the independent watchmaking world. For anyone wanting to step into proper independent horology, this is a fantastic place to start. You get an unusual complication, a hand-wound movement, an early production example and a watch from two enormously respected watchmakers, all without the intimidating price tag usually associated with this level of independent watchmaking. About Habring²

In 1997, Maria and Richard Habring embarked on their horological journey by founding Habring² in the quaint town of Volkermarkt, Austria. Richard Habring’s passion for watchmaking ignited at IWC, where he honed his craft under the esteemed mentorship of Günter Blümlein. He played a pivotal role in the innovative development of the double chronograph—a sophisticated mechanism that would later become a hallmark of precision in watchmaking. With the dedication and support of his wife, Maria, they set out to create timepieces that proudly reflect the rich tradition of Austrian horology. Their journey truly began in 2005 when Habring² introduced a groundbreaking standard for seconds, delivering an ingenious jumping-seconds mechanism that redefined accuracy in timekeeping. By 2007, their commitment to innovation bore fruit as they became the first watch manufacturer to unveil a movement featuring deadbeat seconds. Their craftsmanship was recognised in November 2013 when they celebrated a prestigious victory at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, winning in the “La Petite Aiguille” category—a notable achievement for the boutique brand. Initially, the Habring² model lineup grew modestly by introducing one new model each year, reflecting their focus on quality over quantity. In 2014, a special collaboration with Horlogerie-Suisse.com resulted in a highly exclusive edition of the Habring² Doppel 3 split-second chronograph, further showcasing their artistry. Today, Habring² is celebrated for its meticulous craftsmanship, producing just 50 exquisite timepieces annually. The collection features a diverse array of models: the Josef Regulator, known for its unique time display; the Oskar moonphase, which elegantly tracks lunar phases; the minimalist yet refined Felix; the innovative jumping second Erwin; the sophisticated Chrono-Felix; the practical 24-hour Smart Felix; the inspiring Doppel 38 split-second chronograph; and the intricately designed Foudroyante-Felix, known for its deadbeat seconds. Each watch is a labour of love, contributing to the legacy of fine watchmaking that Habring² proudly continues to cultivate.
