The Watch
MKII was founded in 2002 by Bill Yao. Born and raised in the US he graduated from University. On leaving he went into banking, it was here that his love for watches was rekindled. In 2001 he went back to education to get his M.B.A. He was the first company to offer customisation and parts for other makers watches such as Luminox and the Seiko diver series. Building on this success the company soon evolved specialising in custom Japanese and Swiss-made watches under the MKII brand. MKII as a trademark represents their dedication to utilitarianism, reliability, and timeless styling.
We have here an early MKII Stingray 50 Date based on the 50 Fathoms by Blancpain. It’s 42mm round satin and mirror finished stainless steel case tapers at the curved lugs. A 50mm lug to lug length ensures a comfortable fit on the wrist. On the right side a screw-down crown with double gaskets. The unidirectional bezel has 120 clicks, 5-minute intervals are marked with batons and Arabic numerals coated in SuperLuminova. Double domed sapphire crystal with AR coating sits above a black dial. An outer minute track with 60-minute numerals marking the seconds. Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9 with baton indexes coated in SuperLuminova marking the hours. Broad syringe hands with SuperLuminova infill. Between the 4 and 5 a date window. On the reverse, a polished screw-down case back with MKll engraved in the centre. Inside an Automatic ETA 2824-2 (Elabore grade/Rhodium plated) Incabloc shock protection, hacking and manual winding.
Personal Note
MKII really are continuing to grow and attract the collecting community and take them by storm, more and more people are becoming aware of them and realising how great they are and the value they offer. This early model is fantastic and super well built, to think they were producing watches like this over 10 years ago and still continue to produce fantastic watches today is a reassuring sign.
