The Watch

FORTIS was founded in 1912 by Walter Vogt; their headquarters and factory is based in Grenchen, Switzerland. In 1926 Walter joined forces with the inventor of the automatic movement John Harwood to mass-produce the world's first automatic watch. In 1962 Rolf Vogt, son of the founder, hands over to NASA the Spacematic AR (All Risks) designed by FORTIS. 2003 saw the introduction of the official Cosmonaut Chronograph, which is still worn today as official equipment by Russian Cosmonauts, very much like the Omega Speedmaster Professional is still the official NASA watch.

Our B-42 Official Cosmonauts GMT has a 44mm brushed stainless steel round case. The case perfectly curves over your wrist. A lug to lug length of 53mm and a thickness of 13mm ensures a comfortable fit on the wrist. On the right side, a screw-down signed crown. The 120 clicks unidirectional stainless steel bezel has a 24 hours GMT scale. A flat sapphire crystal has an AR coating on both sides for perfect viewing angles. The black dial is deeply recessed with an outer 24-hour chapter ring complete with day/night separation. An inner 60-minute track painted with white SuperLumiNova. Arabic numeral indices are precisely painted in white SuperLumiNova. At 3 o’clock a date window. Slender sword hands with an orange sweeping second hand and an orange arrow point GMT hand. The three-time zones can be set conveniently for wherever you are in the world, the perfect traveling companion. On the reverse, embossed “Official Cosmonauts'' highlighting their space credentials. Inside an Automatic  ETA 2893-2, 21 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on a leather strap with screwed-in spring bars and a signed buckle. Comes with its original Fortis presentation box and papers.

Personal Note

This watch really surprised me, I absolutely adored the design when I saw it in images but then when I read the dimensions I thought there was no way I'd actually like it on my wrist, how very wrong I was! On the wrist, it wears very well and is actually very comfortable, even on my small 6 3/4inch wrists! Sure it's a huge watch, its heavy and bulky and unforgiving, but that is part of the charm and you're totally aware of that before you put it on!
